6. Roots (2016, History)The original 1976 miniseries — adapting Alex Haley’s bestseller about his family’s history of enslavement in America — was not only one of the most-watched shows in television history, but one of the most important, setting an impossibly high bar for any attempt to revisit the material. But the 2016 version on History was impeccably cast (including Malachi Kirby as Haley’s ancestor Kunta Kinte, and future Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page as Kunta’s grandson Chicken George), and found ways to modernize the storytelling without losing the essence of what made the book and the original TV take so powerful. … [Read more...] about 10 Best Reboots of All Time

The Partnership: How The Mother-Son Bond Between Sophia Loren And Director Edoardo Ponti Led To The Screen Icon’s Most Moving Role In ‘The Life Ahead’
PONTI: There are certain characters that hit a frequency that aligns itself with my mother’s. So, when I started reading this character, her voice came in immediately. For most directors, they don’t want to hear an actor’s voice in their head when they’re reading, when they’re writing, because then they might not get them. But in this case, when I was hearing my mother’s voice, I thought, Well, at least I know I can get her on the phone. I mean, it was no guarantee she would do the movie, because Sophia Loren didn’t build her success by saying yes to everybody that called. But I knew at least I could get her attention. … [Read more...] about The Partnership: How The Mother-Son Bond Between Sophia Loren And Director Edoardo Ponti Led To The Screen Icon’s Most Moving Role In ‘The Life Ahead’
Batman Vs. Superman: Ben Affleck Talks Batman Backlash
While the vitriol has subsided considerably, there was a massive outpouring of negativity from fanboys around the world when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in Batman Vs. Superman. The actor, of course, is no stranger to the superhero genre, portraying blind vigilante Matt Murdock in Marvel's 2003 adventure Daredevil. During a recent interview with Playboy, the actor revealed that Daredevil was the only movie he ever regretted, which may have been part of the motivation in taking on the Batman role. The actor also spoke about the immense negative reactions from the fans and how he handled that, how Zack Snyder's vision convinced him to take the role, how this new version of Batman doesn't "compete" with Christian Bale's version, and how he has grown as an actor and an artist over the past 10 years. … [Read more...] about Batman Vs. ‘Servant’: M. Night Shyamalan and Cast Promise More Horror in Season 2
The world of Servant is much smaller than J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, but there are similarities to his Potter days. “What I'm loving about TV, with the same opportunity I had with Ron, is developing a character over a long period of time,” he says. “It’s a similar process in a way, but obviously very different worlds.” … [Read more...] about ‘Servant’: M. Josh Gad On The Unapologetic, Pure Joy Of Musical Theatre And Apple TV+’s ‘Central Park’
GAD: It was very important to me from the beginning that we made this a true musical in every sense of the word, and that meant that we had to do three to four songs an episode, which is insane to accomplish in 24 to 26 minutes of TV. Part of what makes it so difficult is to create that much content, you really just can’t rely, or shouldn’t rely, on any one or two composers. You need a stable. I had worked with Kate Anderson and Elyssa Samsel, two brilliant composers who had done Olaf’s Frozen Adventure a few years back. And I was blown away because they did the impossible. They took the reins from the extraordinarily talented Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez, and without batting an eye, were able to create songs that belonged alongside some of the greatest songs, in my opinion, in animation history. So I was really floored by their talent. And I reached out to them and I said, “Would you guys be willing to sort of help us with the proof of concept of this … [Read more...] about Josh Gad On The Unapologetic, Pure Joy Of Musical Theatre And Apple TV+’s ‘Central Park’
