Critics Choice Award Winner Jean Smart Misses Ceremony After Testing Positive For Covid

January 15, 2023 by deadline.com

Jean Smart tonight won her second straight Critics Choice Award for her starring role in HBO Max’s Hacks . She was not on hand to accept the trophy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series because the five-time Emmy winner had tested positive for Covid, a rep for Smart confirmed to Deadline. As Deadline reported earlier today, Critics Choice was the first major awards event of 2023 to require a Covid test. The move sidelined a number of nominees and presenters who had planned to attend, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Michelle Pfeiffer. In Hacks , which has been renewed for a third season, Smart plays Deborah Vance, a legendary — and caustic — comedian who is fighting to stay relevant as she ages. In Season 2, Vance left Las Vegas to take her stand-up act on the road, along with her young writer Ava, played by Hannah Einbinder. BBC Developing A24’s ‘Shuggie Bain’ Adaptation, TV Version Of 2020 Booker Prize Winner

March 7, 2022 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE : The BBC is developing A24 ’s adaptation of 2020 Booker Prize winner Shuggie Bain, Deadline can reveal. We understand talks have commenced and decision over greenlight will be made by Ben Irving, who will take over as Interim Drama Director from incumbent Piers Wenger in May. Shuggie Bain producer A24 has hired Wenger and BBC Film Director Rose Garnett to oversee its international slate and for Wenger to sign off the greenlight would likely represent a conflict of interest. A24 and Scott Rudin Productions won the rights to produce the novel for TV in late 2020. At the time, Scott Rudin and Eli Bush were slated to produce and author Douglas Stuart set to adapt. Rudin has since been embroiled in scandal after ex-staffers spoke out about his abusive behavior, and he has removed himself from active projects including five films with A24. The Crown’s Stephen Daldry is reported to be attached to direct Shuggie Bain and it will most … [Read more...] about BBC Developing A24’s ‘Shuggie Bain’ Adaptation, TV Version Of 2020 Booker Prize Winner
