BAFTA has celebrated the number of older white women nominated for best actress at its Television Awards amid a steep decline in ethnic diversity in performance shortlists. All six nominees in the Leading Actress category are white and have been nominated for BAFTAs across film and TV multiple times in the past. Asked if BAFTA had hoped for a different outcome, CEO Jane Millichip said: “There is representation in that category in the fact that if you look at the age of the actresses and the roles written for them, it is extraordinary. This is something that we’ve discussed for a long time in the television and film world: Are the roles written for women over the age of 40? That is a really impressive result.” BAFTA later clarified that Millichip was referring to “representation” for older women as a separate issue from diversity, which it considers to relate to ethnicity and socio-economic background among other factors. Imelda Staunton (aged 67) has been nominated … [Read more...] about BAFTA Defends All-White Best TV Actress Shortlist Amid Big Drop In Nominations For People Of Color

Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Kicks Into High Gear With All April TCM Movie Programming Devoted To The Studio
Turner Classic Movies is devoting the entire month of April to celebrating the 100th anniversary of its landlord, Warner Bros ., with hundreds of films from every decade of the studio, plus a variety of interstitials, documentaries, shorts and Looney Tunes cartoons, as well as interviews with stars and directors focusing on the cinematic achievements of the storied movie factory. Viewers got a taste of the anniversary doings with a tribute reel of highlights of the first 100 years of WB on this year’s Oscar show . But that reel was nearly as much about the studio’s own homegrown output as it was about some classics it acquired ownership to through various transactions with the likes of MGM, New Line Cinema and others. Thus Oscar viewers saw such MGM movies as The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain, Ben-Hur and 2001: A Space Odyssey, along with NL behemoths like the Lord of the Rings and Austin Powers franchises stirred in the same pot as actual Warners “product” as … [Read more...] about Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Kicks Into High Gear With All April TCM Movie Programming Devoted To The Studio
‘The Prom’ Review: Broadway Comedy Razzle-Dazzles Small Town Bigotry
Your prom probably didn’t have a glorious gaggle of Broadway troupers and their trunk loads of self-regard and narcissism gumming things up for your rite of passage – more’s the pity – but in some ways I’d guess Broadway’s musical The Prom isn’t so unlike the one you lived through way back when. The build-up was more fun than the event, right? Inspired by an actual event – and the inspired is apt – The Prom is the latest razzle-dazzle show-biz love fest from director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who applied the same glitz and show-biz glitter to Mean Girls, Aladdin and, more to the point here, Something Rotten! , that great mash-up of the Bard and Broadway. Comparisons won’t do The Prom much good – Something Rotten it isn’t, but it tries. The Prom begins with a first-act of laughs and a demolition of the type of delicious Broadway monsters who can drop Carrie the Musical jokes with the timed precision of a Fosse broken doll walk. The premise … [Read more...] about ‘The Prom’ Review: Broadway Comedy Razzle-Dazzles Small Town Bigotry
Alyssa Farah Griffin Misses ‘The View’ Amid Covid Diagnosis
Alyssa Farah Griffin was notably missing from The View today. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg started off the daytime talk show by addressing the reason the conservative co-host was not on the “Hot Topics” table. “Hello and welcome to The View . Alyssa is not here because, unfortunately, she has Covid. Yeah, it’s still around,” Goldberg said at the top of the show. Co-host Sunny Hostin took the chair usually occupied by Griffin and Sarah Haines joked that the former prosecutor was the new conservative co-host. Goldberg then added, “So, feel better and tune in tomorrow when U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy gives us the latest on the Covid crisis and other healthcare issues. We’ve got some questions.” Aside from her co-hosting duties on The View , Griffin is also a contributor on CNN. The hosts of The View regularly get tested for Covid and back in November 2022 Ana Navarro and Goldberg tested positive for the virus. Navarro got “stuck” quarantining in an NYC … [Read more...] about Alyssa Farah Griffin Misses ‘The View’ Amid Covid Diagnosis

It’s going to take a couple of days. But, for now, I’ll just say thank you to all that have held me up and made me better,” he shared on Instagram.
