Welcome to our annual list of high school students who ranked at the top of their graduating class. We got responses this year from 84 schools, public and private, in St. Paul, nearby suburbs and western Wisconsin. Schools were asked to send us the names of their high achievers — however they define them. Some schools use the “valedictorian” and “salutatorian” distinctions. Others designate “highest honors” or degrees of “cum laude” or a percentage of the senior class. Schools submitting 10 names or fewer are invited to ask their students for an inspirational quote, and as ever, students cited words from a range of historic and contemporary writers, musicians and artists, political figures, scientists and celebrities. One pulled inspiration from the 1800s, with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s advice to “Finish each day and be done with it, you have done what you could. …Tomorrow is a new day, begin it well and with too high … [Read more...] about Top graduates 2018: High achievers and words that inspired them

Remember that time when Universal Pictures was building the hype for their epic Dark Universe monster movie franchise? Then Tom Cruise's The Mummy was released, and they just stopped talking about it and the whole thing just kind of faded away like it never happened and a bunch of producers dropped out. The second film in the franchise was supposed to be The Bride of Frankenstein, but it seemed like they pulled the plug on that. We just assumed the Dark Universe thing had been abandoned, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. There was a recent Instagram post from artist Robert Vargas, that was discovered by Universal Monsters Universe, and it suggests that Universal Pictures hasn't given up on it yet. Apparently, Vargas had a meeting last week with the Dark Universe team at Universal Pictures, and he says that he's "looking forward to contributing to the Universal Pictures legacy with my work." Then added, "Monster things in the works." We don't know what exactly he's working on, … [Read more...] about It Seems That Universal’s Dark Universe Monster Movie Franchise Isn’t Dead Yet

Sony's Masters of the Universe movie is currently looking for a director ahead of its production start, which was rumored to be this spring when David S. Goyer was attached to direct. While casting has yet to be announced, Channing Tatum was attached to the project back in 2013 when Jon M. Chu was at the helm, but that was over 5 years ago and the Masters of the Universe remake appears to be in limbo yet again. However, some new fan art imagines what Channing Tatum would look like as He-Man and it's almost perfect. If the Masters of the Universe remake takes some direct influence from the original cartoon, Channing Tatum would make for a pretty good choice to play the campy hero He-Man. Some weird humor would fit the character well and Tatum can surely deliver that. Obviously, Channing Tatum can pull off the He-Man physique, which is just as important as the acting skills. We definitely do not need a repeat of Dolph Lundgren's version of the hero, which came off as pretty wooden. The … [Read more...] about Masters of the Universe Fan Art Proves Channing Tatum Is the Perfect He-Man?
Sprout has a new name — and a broader focus. The preschool-targeted network is being relaunched as Universal Kids on Saturday, expanding its target audience to kids 2-12 and ramping up its slate consisting of animated shows from DreamWorks, unscripted originals and international hits. The new schedule features content that is "unique and distinct in the market," general manager Deirdre Brennan says, noting the company did a great deal of research on kids and their interests. "We're not really offering the same choices. We're offering something to 2- to 12-year-olds that has a slightly different purpose — widening their eyes, opening their minds and celebrating many aspects of being a kid. We have great [shows] for the preschoolers, which is important, but we needed to grow up with the rest of the family." The launch lineup includes several international acquisitions, including the series The Next Step, Nowhere Boys, The Deep, Masha & the … [Read more...] about Universal Kids Acquires Bear Grylls Series Ahead of Relaunch (Exclusive)
