Karina Longworth ’s house is, quite possibly, haunted. This is not necessarily something she has experienced herself, she tells me of her pale-pink 1926 Mediterranean, where Longworth could be found one July morning on the frond-shadowed patio. But it is something she has on authority from a friend who drunkenly stumbled in from the pool one night and heard, in the empty home, a dinner party going on in the dining room upstairs. Since then, the hauntedness or unhauntedness of Longworth’s abode has become a matter of some debate. “My friend thinks my house is haunted,” she says wryly. “I think he drinks too much.” Either way, there is certainly no one better at reviving Hollywood ’s ghosts than Longworth. A film critic and historian, she is best known for the podcast You Must Remember This, which she researches, writes, and records in a tiny foam-lined closet off the downstairs office of her husband, director Rian Johnson. In the eight years since she launched the podcast with an … [Read more...] about How Karina Longworth Brought Sex and Sleaze Back to Hollywood History

‘Where Are the Jews?’: Scandal Erupts at the Academy Museum
On Sept. 25, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures held its opening gala with a starry guest list that included Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Queen Latifah, Patty Jenkins, Tiffany Haddish, Kristen Stewart, and Jurnee Smollet. It was a moment long in the making, given that planning of the Renzo Piano-designed mecca celebrating the history of film first began back in 2005 and was delayed by the rise of the Covid pandemic. Though eyebrows were raised by the fact that the A-list revelers mingled maskless inside the 33,000-square-foot space on Wilshire Boulevard at a time when celebrities were publicly chastising those who ignored Covid precautions, a much bigger controversy was brewing. Donors and influential Academy members, many of whom already had received private tours, were outraged that Hollywood ’s origin story — wherein a group of mostly Jewish émigrés fled persecution in their home countries to create what would become a multibillion-dollar, American-led industry — … [Read more...] about ‘Where Are the Jews?’: Scandal Erupts at the Academy Museum

Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well,’ Kendrick Lamar Short Film Eligible for 2023 Oscars
Short films by both Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar have qualified for the Academy Awards ’ best live action short category. According to the Hollywood Reporter , Swift’s All Too Well: A Short Film , written and directed by the singer, gained eligibility because it screened Nov. 2021 at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square; the window for eligibility in the live action short category for the 2023 Oscars runs from Oct. 1, 2021 to Sept. 30, 2022. Lamar became eligible for the category when he quietly screened a six-minute video for his Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers track “We Cry Together” — a song and visual that featured actress Taylour Paige — at Los Angeles’ Laemmle Royal Theater in June. THR writes that the We Cry Together , which starred Lamar and Paige, only showed once a day during the weeklong screening, with each showing largely occupied by friends and family of the rapper, though a very limited number of fans were permitted into each showing; … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well,’ Kendrick Lamar Short Film Eligible for 2023 Oscars
How N.E.R.D.’s Debut Brought the Dawn of a Boundless Era
Right from the start, In Search of… stood out. I discovered N.E.R.D.’s 2002 debut at a Best Buy on the rim of Houston’s I-10 loop, sitting at the front of the store on a blue kiosk marked $6.99. I was a first-year high school English teacher, struggling to pull together all the things expected of me. There was this unfussy album cover staring at me, with a twenty-something Black guy on a battered-looking couch in a nondescript apartment playing a video game in his house clothes, blankly staring at an off-screen TV, blissfully unaware of the camera. The cover drew me in with its mundane imagery — a breath of fresh air compared to the bad-boy glamor on the covers of the rap albums I was also buying around that time. Nearly every N.ER.D. fan has a story like this about the first time In Search Of … crossed their radar. And over the next 20 years, the album became a touchstone to the next generation of visionaries. Created by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, a.k.a. … [Read more...] about How N.E.R.D.’s Debut Brought the Dawn of a Boundless Era
Metallica Frontman James Hetfield Enters Rehab, Band Scraps Tour
Getty Metallica frontman James Hetfield is going back to rehab ... and as a result, the rock band is canceling a tour through Australia and New Zealand. It's unclear what prompted the lead singer and rhythm guitarist to re-enter a treatment program ... but James' relapse is serious enough that he's going back to rehab for the first time since December 2001. Metallica says they are postponing their upcoming tour down under. A Friday statement from the band says ... "We are truly sorry to inform our fans and friends that we must postpone our upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand. As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years. He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again." Metallica's statement continues ... "We appreciate your understanding and support for James and, as always, thank you for being a part of our Metallica family.” The band … [Read more...] about Metallica Frontman James Hetfield Enters Rehab, Band Scraps Tour
Live Nation Admits Helping Bands Like Metallica Scalp Tickets
TMZ/Getty Composite Live Nation 's provoking the ire of concert lovers everywhere, because it's fessed up to the shady practice of putting tickets directly on resale sites ... before the public even has a chance to buy them at face value. The touring company's admission comes on the heels of a Billboard report detailing a secretly recorded phone call between a Live Nation honcho and an event promoter for Metallica in February 2017 ... days before the band announced its WorldWired North American stadium tour. During the call ... the 2 parties agreed to put 88,000 tickets directly on secondary market sites like StubHub, so people never got a chance to buy them on sites like Ticketmaster, which is actually owned by Live Nation. The company's admitted to facilitating this scalping practice for "about a dozen artists out of the thousands we work with" ... but other than Metallica, the bands remain unknown. Live Nation says it did it because bands know face value … [Read more...] about Live Nation Admits Helping Bands Like Metallica Scalp Tickets
Metallica’s James Hetfield ‘A Little Pissed’ at Raiders Move to Vegas
TMZSports.com Metallica frontman James Hetfield is a huge Raiders fan -- and says he's "a little pissed" that his team is ditching Oakland for Sin City. FYI, Hetfield actively campaigned for the Raiders to stay in the Bay Area -- and publicly supported Ronnie Lott in his efforts to build a new stadium for the team in Oakland. But those plans didn't work out and Raiders owner, Mark Davis , ultimately got league approval to move the team to Las Vegas. The team is expected to relocate in 2019. Hetfield says he'll continue to support the Silver and Black (he stuck by them during the L.A. years) ... but it's clear he's still bummed. … [Read more...] about Metallica’s James Hetfield ‘A Little Pissed’ at Raiders Move to Vegas
How Do You Make a Western in the 21st Century?
There’s a lot of ways to describe Jordan Peele ’s Nope : an update on “Watch the Skies!” sci-fi from the 1950s; a tribute to Steven Spielberg’s 1970s blockbuster building blocks (what if those Close Encounter of the Third Kind UFOs were just hungry, extraterrestrial great white sharks?); a 21st century meta-text about what we watch and why we keep watching it. All 100-percent accurate. But read the reviews and explainers and numerous think pieces on Peele’s latest blend of horror and commentary, and there’s one word that keeps popping up, again and again. It’s mentioned when they talk about Jupiter’s Claim, the modest frontier-themed amusement park run by Steven Yuen’s former child actor, who once played a pint-sized sheriff in a movie and still takes his fancy sartorial cues from that role. It’s namechecked in the film posters you see at Haywood Ranch, notably Buck and the Preacher and Duel at Diablo . You can see traces of it in the movie’s scenes of folks handling horses … [Read more...] about How Do You Make a Western in the 21st Century?
“You Are Next”: J.K.Rowling Receives Death Threat From Supporter Of Salman Rushdie’s Alleged Attacker
Harry Potter creator JK Rowling has received a public threat from an Iran-backing extremist, following her denunciation of yesterday’s attack on fellow British author Salman Rushdie . Rowling – who has previously been targeted by some trans activists for her beliefs on gender – had published a post expressing her horror at the attempt on Rushdie’s life, when one responder threatened her harm. Rowling wrote on Friday night, “Horrifying news. Feeling very sick right now. Let him be ok.” Meer Asif Aziz, described in his Twitter bio as ‘student, social activist, political activist and research activist’ responded, “Don’t worry you are next.” . @TwitterSupport any chance of some support? pic.twitter.com/AoeCzmTKaU — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) August 13, 2022 Rowling today publicly asked Twitter to intervene, asking @TwitterSupport, “Any chance of some support?” but Aziz’s post currently remains in place.
