USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a study today examining the diversity of Netflix ’s original content. If anything the study could be summarized by Dr. Stacy L. Smith who said in a video: “Inclusion happens when women are given the keys to the kingdom.” “I rarely have anything positive to say,” said Dr. Smith said during a symposium for the unveiling of the Netflix study. “This report was a bit of a reprieve from my typical rollout of information.” Dr. Smith was joined on the virtual panel by Netflix’s Bela Bajaria , Vice President, Global Series; Scott Stuber Vice President, Global Film; as well as Tigertail director Alan Yang and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom director George C. Following in the footsteps of Cannes, which was forced to cancel its famous film festival in May but still went on to reveal what its schedule would have been anyway, the Telluride Film Festival on Monday released its own lineup. The films would have been presented over Labor Day weekend September 3-7, but the fest was canceled last month after trying to hang on for some version of its former self in light of the pandemic. Similar to what other fests have programmed such as Kate Winslet -starrer Ammonite, Idris Elba in Concrete Cowboys and director Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland starring Frances McDormand , the list is similar to the eclectic, film-centric nature of Telluride minus some of the starrier Oscar campaign-driven films that have put the fest on the must-stop list for Academy Award hopefuls for much of this century. This week's episode is majorly about providing answers to questions we have mulled over for long- why sitcoms, did Wanda already have powers before being experimented on, where are Billy and Tommy, etc. But the real shocker of the episode is hidden in its mid-credit scenes which truly takes our breath away- [SPOILER ALERT] the real Vision being brought to life but as a different version of him which sets up a bleak future. While Wanda's storyline may or may not include a hero-turned-villain plot in the future, if Marvel Studios is once again going for twisting the comicbook storylines, especially Vision's, we might already have an Avenger who won't be fighting for what's right anymore.
