Given all the media attention focused on Donald Trump this week, I thought it prudent to make sure we're all clear on this. Donald Trump does not seriously believe that the elected President of the United States is not a natural-born citizen. There is absolutely no way someone with the Donald's business savvy is actually stupid enough to buy into this birther nonsense. There is only one reason he is saying these things: attention. We have no problem believing our elected leaders are lying even when they know the truth. Is it really that big of a leap to say Trump is doing the same? I feel this is an important distinction to make, because from George Will calling him a "bloviating ignoramus" to Wolf Blitzer calling him "ridiculous," the media seems to be okay with calling Trump a genuine birther. Confronting Donald Trump with the president's legitimate birth certificate is going to change nothing because Trump isn't interested in the facts. He knows what they are. He knows this whole … [Read more...] about Just So Were All Clear, There Is No Way Donald Trump Is Actually A Birther
Just when you thought Donald Trump's presidential run couldn't get any more absurd, the real estate mogul embroils himself in a feud with Fox News' Megyn Kelly, and consequently turned the most influential voice of the online right into a humorless college student looking for a safe space. Redstate chief Erick Erickson has banned Donald Trump from the Redstate gathering over his offensive comments, an irony so rich, you could frost a gay wedding cake with it. In response to Trump's off-the-cuff comment about Kelly's metaphorical bleeding orifices, Erickson took to the stage Saturday morning, and explained his decision to ban Trump: "I think it was inappropriate, I really think it was inappropriate. I've got my wife here, I've got my daughters here, I've got 800 friends of mine here, it's a family-friendly program, and if he's not going to clarify that this isn't what he meant, I don't think I want him at my event." It would be a simple matter to ask whether Erickson wants his daughter … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Turns Conservatives Into Liberal PC Word Police
Sh*t just got real between Republican frontrunner Donald Trump and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson. According to two polls released this week, Dr. Carson could present the first real challenge to Trump's supremacy since the real estate mogul rocketed to the front of the GOP pack a few months ago. In a Monmouth University poll of Iowa voters, Carson tied Trump at 23 percent, and in a brand new national Public Policy Polling survey, Carson was the only Republican candidate to beat Trump head-to-head, with 49% of Republicans saying they preferred Carson to 43% for Trump. In that national poll, Trump still leads the field overall with 29%, and Carson is a distant second at 15%, but these results show room for Carson to overtake Trump should the field narrow. Up until now, the two candidates have been playing nice with each other. Carson has defended Trump over his immigration remarks, while Trump has done little but mention Carson in his frequent Twitter polling updates, although he … [Read more...] about What Happens When Donald Trump Attacks Ben Carson?
Lots of very, very interesting things were said throughout the 30-minute chat, but the best bits didn't come from either Jones or Trump. They came instead from Twitter, where journalists, comedians and commenters were waiting in the wings for the best moment(s) to strike. Luckily, every single second of the interview provided such a moment. Even the commercials were fantastic. Newt Gingrich said on Fox Business Network this morning that the Brussels terrorist attacks yesterday "in many ways validated Donald Trump's entire candidacy." His rationale for this? Trump has been talking tough on terror for a while now and warned that something bad was happening in Brussels two months ago. Gingrich said he's like Ronald Reagan in that respect. he also defended Trump in a must-read interview with Slate, where Gingrich said he has absolutely zero concerns about Trump and, when asked about Trump's lack of foreign policy expertise, suggested his interviewer read The Art of the Deal. Here's a highlight (interviewer in bold): Mr. Speaker, we are talking about a possible president here. You are talking about a guy who was smart enough to build Trump Towers, build lots of hotels, build lots of casinos, and own the Miss Universe contest. He is not stupid. For many people, that seems to be inconceivable because they have a university Ph.D. theory of being smart. Didn't you … [Read more...] about Gingrich: Brussels Attacks In Many Ways Validated Donald Trumps Entire Candidacy
You know how I know that my friend doesn't have an "extremely large Internet presence?" Because all he does is talk about how large his internet presence is. You know how I know that Donald Trump is not a man of the people? Because he thinks eating a Big Mac will prove that he is one. I'm not sure if it's the "small loan" of $1million given to him by his father to start his business, or if it's the fact that he's sitting on a private jet while eating his celebratory McDonald's, but something does not add up here. As Eater has pointed out, Trump doesn't like to touch food with his hands. Maybe it's because he's super-polite when he eats, but we're betting that it's because if he did, people would notice how tiny his tiny, tiny hands actually are. Last night, Trump, who is the presumptive nominee for the Republican party in the 2016 election somehow celebrated 1,237 delegates. This is the picture he posted to his Instagram, to prove that he's a man of the people: [H/T Eater] Related: … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Celebrates 1,237 Delegates With a Big Mac Because Hes a Man of The People
According to newly-emerging figures from a Washington Post/ABC News poll, various demographics around the country have reached record high unfavorable numbers for the real estate titan. And ahead of his all-but-certain matchup against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, it couldn't come at a worse time. The overall figures are brutal for Trump: 70% of Americans now view the GOP presumptive nominee as unfavorable, compared to 29% favorable. While much has been said regarding the unfavorables of both remaining candidates, it is clear according to these new figures that one is far more disliked than the other. Hillary Clinton boasts a 55% unfavorable rating according to the same poll, which WaPo points out is, "a new high" for the former Secretary. But a closer examination at the breakdown of the demographics paints the bleakest picture for Trump, who has long heralded that he will be able to win across all demographics. His unfavorables now include: 73 percent of moderates77 … [Read more...] about These Brutal New Poll Numbers Show Just How Much People Dislike Donald Trump
You know that there have been a lot of headlines about "the media" lately. There have been so many, in fact, that the media is starting to be the boogeyman of, well, the media. The tone of Donald Trump's voice when he mentions what he sees as the media's dishonesty, or calls a reporter a sleaze, could convince anyone who didn't know better that any type of formal news presentation is a big old sham. Long before Trump was dragging the media into its own meta-headlines, though, there was Don Lemon. The CNN anchor has made plenty of his own headlines throughout his career because he was talking about social issues and hot cultural topics (like the use of the N-word, an infamous pet peeve that goes way back) years before talking about social issues became the popular thing to do. Surprisingly, so has Trump. The two have been on the record talking about racism, for instance, for years, though they've done it in different ways. What was once considered a bug is now a regular feature of … [Read more...] about CNNs Don Lemon Tells Mediaite What He and Donald Trump Have in Common
Lanny Davis probably thought he had a point when he began asking Megyn Kelly a long, rambling question during Tuesday night's post-Vice Presidential debate analysis. But by the end, surely even he must have realized that his query had all the coherence of a drunken wedding toast. This must be enjoyed in both written and visual form. The full transcription is below. First, the video. And here's the transcription: When I hear Megyn Kelly, who I respect greatly, who is the subject of vicious attacks by Donald Trump, with horrible use of words, and we hear Governor Pence constantly say insults about Hillary Clinton, when facts about Donald Trump are called insults, I'd like to really ask Megyn Kelly whether you felt a certain sense of satisfaction that all the insults hurled at you by Donald Trump are now being called insults, rather than Governor Pence decrying the kind of personal insults that he gave to Jeb Bush, to John Kasich, and even to you when you moderated the debate. Who knows … [Read more...] about Watch Lanny Davis Awkwardly Ask Megyn Kelly How She Felt About Donald Trumps Insults
Kaine spent the majority of the night on the offensive, barraging Pence with a list of Donald Trump's various controversies and challenging him to defend them. While Pence counterpunched and maneuvered around talking about Trump, there were several instances where Pence insisted that Trump didn't say something he did say or otherwise, misrepresented what Trump did say. Clinton's campaign was taking notice, and so, they put out a new video about what Pence and Trump have said about things like Vladimir Putin, immigration, and nuclear proliferation. At the #VPDebate, Mike Pence tried really, really hard to deny pretty much everything Donald Trump has said and done. Let's replay the tape: pic.twitter.com/5XNKyFX6az - Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) October 5, 2016 By the ad's reckoning, it would appear there's some mixed messaging taking place. Still, the video offers a bit of sympathy on Pence, saying "we'd have a hard time defending [Trump], too." As the Fox pundit celebrates Trump's victory, he has suggested multiple times that the President-elect should blacklist a wide variety of news outlets over their "collusion" with Hillary Clinton. During a conversation yesterday with Matt Boyle on Breitbart News Daily, Hannity opined that the election has exposed the great majority of the press as corrupt or clearly biased. "It is the most underreported story out there. They're not going to cover the fact that they themselves colluded with Clinton, helped Clinton, in some cases, gave questions to her or sought questions for Trump or for Cruz through the DNC…," Hannity said. "They're all in this hyperventilating mode about 'fake news' now, but they are fake news. That's them. It's now on display for the world to see." Hannity also expressed his view that the media's credibility has been crippled by their own surprise over Trump's victory. He also opined that, beyond taking credentials away from members of the White House press … [Read more...] about Hannity: Why Does Donald Trump Need a White House Press Office? He Doesnt
Late Wednesday morning, while speaking at the United Nations, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley put Russia on notice over its "false narrative" about Syria in light of the recent poison gas attack. "Iran has reinforced Assad's military and Russia has shielded Assad from U.N. sanctions," she said. "If Russia has the influence in Syria that it claims to have, we need to see them use it. We need to see them put an end to these horrific acts. How many more children have to die before Russia cares?" Haley then moved on more directly to addressing potential action against Syria. "If we are not able to enforce resolutions preventing the use of chemical weapons, what does that say about our effectiveness in this institution?" she asked." If we are not prepared to act, then this council will keep meeting month after month to express outrage at the continuing use of chemical weapons and in that we are compelled to take our own action. For the sake of the victims, I hope the rest of the … [Read more...] about Nikki Haley Slams Russia At the U.N: How Many Children Have to Die?
Keanu Reeves hasn’t really been up to much lately — it’s been literally years since we’ve seen him in anything substantial, and that picture of him eating a sandwich on a park bench probably doesn’t count. The trailer for 47 Ronin just got released today, though, and it admittedly looks kinda neat. I mean, you know, as far as vaguely exploitative-looking Japanese stories produced by Hollywood with non-Japanese leads go. Loosely based on an actual historical drama that’s been one of the most popular themes in Japanese culture and art for centuries, the movie follows group of guess-how-many Ronin as they get revenge on the Overlord who killed their master and banished all of them from their homes. If we’re judging it from the trailer alone, it looks sort of like 300 meets Princess Mononoke. But, you know, with Keanu Reeves as a mysterious outcast samurai. I think if I heard correctly, he also gets called a “half-breed,” so I guess … [Read more...] about How Many Ronin Does It Take to Make a Keanu Reeves Samurai Movie? 47, Apparently [Video]
Trump X. See also “Charlie X” (Star Trek episode). Not to be confused in ANY WAY with civil rights leader Malcolm X. He’s erratic, petulant, immature, and seems to have limitless power over his followers, capable of bending reality itself to his will. D.C. Fontana had him pegged in 1966. Welcome to the world of Donald X. There was a time when Donald Trump’s popularity could only be seen in terms of a right wing, middle America backlash against “elitist” coastal liberals: If the social justice yahoos hate him, he must represent wholesome, traditional values. And then, with his election, folks on both sides came fully face to face with the man himself, not a clever actor playing a bigot for the base, not the stick-it-to-the-man outsider ready to take down the system from within. He was just Trump, the erratic, ignorant, self-aggrandizing bully cavorting on small screens and sports bar jumbo TVs throughout 2016—the Trump who was exactly as … [Read more...] about “Charlie X”: 1966 Star Trek Episode Perfectly Demonstrates How to Deal With Donald Trump
There’s been a lot of talk about the dangers of legitimizing Donald Trump and his fascist tendencies, but it seems the person with the biggest problems in navigating the lending of legitimacy to something they don’t like may be Trump himself. Last night, the biggest bombshell so far in a wave of damaging information on the Trump team dropped: CNN and the New York Times reported that senior members of Trump’s campaign staff had repeated, “constant” contacts with Russian officials during the presidential campaign. CNN reported, “Officials emphasized that communications between campaign staff and representatives of foreign governments are not unusual. However, these communications stood out to investigators due to the frequency and the level of the Trump advisers involved. Investigators have not reached a judgment on the intent of those conversations.” Of course, their reports were based on information from anonymous sources, because the ongoing … [Read more...] about Does Donald Trump Realize He Basically Confirmed Reports That His Campaign Contacted Russia After Calling Them Fake News?
"I think this is by far, in my lifetime, the strangest campaign or presidential election I've ever seen," James DeMonaco says. "When I was looking back on candidates, I wasn't even able to draw upon anything that even resembled this crazy reality." In the midst of a chaotic presidential race, the timing couldn't be more serendipitous for director James DeMonaco's The Purge: Election Year. Based on its opening day today, the movie, which appears to have struck a nerve, is looking to beat out pricier newcomers like The BFG and The Legend of Tarzan over the July Fourth weekend. Election Year, the third installment in The Purge franchise, is a horror-thriller that follows Sen. Charlie Roan (played by Elizabeth Mitchell) as she campaigns for the presidency with a vow to finally end the annual Purge, a 12-hour period during which all acts of violence and crime are legal. The film echoes some of the violence that has been a recurring concern for Donald Trump's campaign, where some rallies … [Read more...] about Rapid Round: ‘The Purge: Election Year’ Director on How the Violence at Donald Trump’s Rallies Made Its Way Into His Movie
Yet the son of President Ronald Reagan is supporting the GOP candidate as he discusses John Hinckley Jr., Bill O'Reilly and sexual abuse with THR: "My sister Maureen and I are the only people ever born and raised in a family with an Academy Award-winning actress and a president of the United States. Nobody else has had that life." Michael Reagan, the son of Ronald Reagan and actress Jane Wyman, is a writer and former radio talk-show host. The conservative activist, 71, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the presidential race, the recent release of the man who tried to kill his father, accusations that his dad suffered from Alzheimer’s while president and the accuracy of Bill O'Reilly's Killing Reagan. See video of O'Reilly sparring with George Will over the Alzheimer's controversy below. Are you supporting Donald Trump? (Laughs). Yes. I’m supporting him with reservations. You can’t treat them like you treat … [Read more...] about Michael Reagan: People Who Support Donald Trump on Social Media Are “Psychotic” (Q&A)
The presidential candidates pen op-eds one day before Election Day. One day before voters will be hitting the polls, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton penned their final pleas for the presidency. In Monday op-eds for USA Today, the candidates addressed Americans in dueling pitches answering the same question: Why should you vote for me? The op-eds were published in print on Monday and posted online Sunday night. An online poll accompanying each shows 54 percent of readers strongly agreeing with Clinton's message, and 41 percent strongly agreeing with Trump's, as of this article's posting time. In Trump's piece, titled, "We must clean up this corruption," the GOP nominee vowed to repeal and replace Obamacare and renegotiate the Clintons' "disastrous" NAFTA and China trade deals and promised more education opportunity for minority students. "Real change also means draining the swamp of corruption in Washington," wrote Trump in his 568-word pitch. "We must fix a rigged system in which … [Read more...] about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton Pitch Voters in USA Today Op-Eds
The inside story of how a renegade group of conservatives working in the TV and film industry beat liberal celebrities at their own political game: Pat Boone made phone calls, Jon Voight worked talk radio and countless actors and filmmakers worked tirelessly out of the public eye. You probably didn’t get a phone call from Pat Boone ahead of the Nov. 8 election if you live in Democratic states like California and New York, but you may have if you reside in a swing state where polls indicated it was a toss-up between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. “I’m asking, I’m praying, that you’ll vote for the Republican platform and Donald Trump for president,” the legendary singer says in a robocall that went to 3 million registered voters just before Americans elected Trump their next president. The robocalls, though, are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the many ways — some more stealthy than others — that a band of conservative … [Read more...] about How Conservative Hollywood Worked to Elect Donald Trump
Donald Trump is doing business again with NBCUniversal after an announcement on Tuesday that he will be hosting Saturday Night Live on November 7. So what about Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Trump’s rivals for the Republican throne? Do they too get to host SNL? Live from New York… It’s Lindsey Graham?! Other Republican presidential candidates may look to the FCC for answers. The FCC has something that’s commonly known as the “Equal Time” rule. If a broadcast station gives one candidate airtime in anything other than a newscast or news interview program, the other candidates shall be afforded equal opportunity. This doesn’t necessarily mean the same opportunity. Sorry, Lindsey Graham. You won’t be hosting SNL anytime soon. But it could mean that NBC stations have the obligation to let other candidates appear for free for an equal amount of time. NBCU has likely been thinking about this scenario for quite some time. After all, Trump hosted The … [Read more...] about What Does Donald Trump’s ‘SNL’ Appearance Mean for the FCC’s “Equal Time” Rule?
