Networks Plan Special Coverage Following Supreme Court’s Abortion Ruling
Broadcast networks broke into regular programming to cover the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade, while cable networks have been virtually non-stop in providing reaction. That will continue this evening. Rachel Maddow will host her MSNBC show, breaking from her regular schedule. Norah O’Donnell will anchor CBS Evening News from the Supreme Court. At 8 PM, PBS will feature The End of Roe: A PBS NewsHour Special Report , with Judy Woodruff looking at the legal and cultural impact. Washington Week , hosted by Yamiche Alcindor, will focus entirely on the Roe decision and feature the Politico reporter who broke the leaked draft opinion. That leaked opinion gave networks extra time to prepare for a momentous ruling. MSNBC, which ran commercial free for four hours after the decision, had reporters in Jackson, MS and St. Louis, MO, capturing the scene outside abortion clinics in two states that have so-called “trigger laws,” where abortion laws immediately … [Read more...] about Networks Plan Special Coverage Following Supreme Court’s Abortion Ruling
Greg Laemmle Wants More Reviews Of Indie Films To Speed Arthouse Revival – Specialty Preview
A24 is going animated whimsical with Marcel the Shell With Shoes On , Neon opens Beba , Cohen Media Group presents Apples , IFC Midnight Flux Gourmet and Abramorama a documentary The Human Trial in limited release at arthouse cinemas. These venues have been doing a bit better, slowly luring Covid-spooked key older demos back into the theater-going habit, attracting some younger viewers (and playing big franchise movies because they have to). Greg Laemmle , CEO of Laemmle Theatres, understands recovery takes time, especially with independent distributors spending less on marketing. That’s why he counts more than ever on reviews to attract an audience. “Our theatres have been open for over a year since the 13-month shutdown, and every week we present an array of smaller foreign-language films, documentaries, and indie features. Distributors aren’t advertising in print like they did pre-pandemic. But if you look in the LA Times every day, you’ll … [Read more...] about Greg Laemmle Wants More Reviews Of Indie Films To Speed Arthouse Revival – Specialty Preview

Bill Maher’s ‘Real Time’ Looks For The Center Harbor In A Sea Of Outrage Over Roe V. Wade
It was the last Real Time before a five-week break, and luckily for Bill Maher , he had one last show to discuss the hottest topic of the moment, the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. As much as the country was trying today to make sense of how the new order will affect life in these United States, so Maher and his guests struggled to understand the how and why of it. Maher began by referencing another recent Supeme Court ruling on carrying guns. “Welcome to right wing America, where if you want to end a young life, you have to shoot them,” he said, ruefully. We are now in a very different America, Maher noted. It’s one where if you ask a drug dealer if they are holding, “It’s about the Morning After pill.” The scariest part of this, Maher said, was the portion of Justice Clarence Thomas’s opinion that indicated the Roe v. Wade ruling may have broader applications to other state’s rights issues like gay marriage and birth control. “Everything but interracial … [Read more...] about Bill Maher’s ‘Real Time’ Looks For The Center Harbor In A Sea Of Outrage Over Roe V.
