We’ve All Had One — A Tom Cruise Moment
Every journalist who covered Hollywood in the Golden Era that stretched roughly from Risky Business (1983) through Top Gun: Maverick ( now ) has had a Tom Cruise moment. I had mine in 2002. My father had just died. It was a rough death, not quick, and as I was driving back for the last time from attending him in Sacramento, I made myself a promise: I would be at peace with everyone for a while. No fighting. No arguments. What anyone asked, insofar as I could, I would just do. ’Top Gun: Maverick’ From Cannes To Theaters – Deadline’s Complete Coverage As luck would have it, the first test occurred somewhere around Bakersfield. On the road, I got a call from Maer Roshan , now editor of Los Angeles Magazine , then editorial director of Tina Brown ’s Talk . We have a problem , explained Maer. Talk had scheduled some sort of theme issue–something about business and/or professional life in America. But Tina had managed to promise the cover to Tom … [Read more...] about We’ve All Had One — A Tom Cruise Moment
The Trippy Troubadour: Micah Nelson Explains Why ‘Perfect’ Is Overrated
A little more than a dozen years ago, Willie Nelson stumbled out of the poker room at his house in Maui in a haze of marijuana smoke to find his then-14-year-old son Micah playing Mario Kart on a Nintendo 64. Micah had just returned from a school trip, and his father greeted him with a huge grin. “Welcome home, Particle Kid !” Willie said. “I thought it was the funniest thing, so I never forgot it,” Micah says. “Years later I asked him about it and he said, ‘I was trying to say “Welcome home, Prodigal Son,” but I was so stoned it came out as ‘Particle Kid.'” By that point, the teenaged Micah had already started recording his own low-fi, dreamscape music – a slow tumble of guitars, far-off vocals, and washes of rhythm and noise – and when he decided to release it, he used the nom de smoke-plume that Willie had given him. The first Particle Kid collections were limited to 200 cassette tapes on the indie label Dome of Doom, and there was no sign they came from the son of Willie … [Read more...] about The Trippy Troubadour: Micah Nelson Explains Why ‘Perfect’ Is Overrated
Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
Whispering Bill Pifer is dying. The cancer growing in his throat has now all but choked off his raspy voice. A lip reader stood beside him and interpreted his words to the courtroom. They came slow and measured, the damning silent words of a dying Hell’s Angel. “ I understand I would have complete immunity,” Pifer’s lips said. “I won’t testify without it. The time I have left, I want to spend on the street.” Sonny Barger, 33-year-old president of the Hell’s Angels, supposedly talked too much to Whispering Bill while they were both in the Alameda County Jail in Oakland, California. The cold-eyed Barger has a reputation as a braggart, and this time, according to police, something he and Whispering Bill talked about led them to the hilly grasslands near Ukiah in far northern California, where police found three bodies stuffed into abandoned wells on a 153-acre ranch owned by the Angels. Big Tom Shull, 24, and Charles Baker, 30, had both been strangled. Their bodies had been in the … [Read more...] about Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
‘Mayans M.C.’ Review: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spin-off Is a Weaker Retread
Sons of Anarchy was one of the biggest hits in the history of FX. The outlaw biker club drama’s second season was a classic. Katey Sagal was annually one of the Emmys’ most egregious snubs, and the show had a deep ensemble of actors like Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff, Ryan Hurst and Jimmy Smits to elevate what creator Kurt Sutter once described as “bloody pulp fiction with highly complex characters.” Sons was also given to excess in almost every way: more plot twists, more graphic torture, more minutes per episode. (It, probably more than any other recent series, is responsible for the trend of drama episodes routinely creeping past the one-hour mark.) Just more more more, until it became too exhausting to watch. By the time Jax Teller made his final ride, even many die-hard SAMCRO fans had had enough. After a misfire with the medieval fantasy The Bastard Executioner , Sutter has returned to familiar territory with Mayans M.C. , a spin-off (co-created by Elgin James) set in … [Read more...] about ‘Mayans M.C.’ Review: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spin-off Is a Weaker Retread
Angels in Court: The Strange Tale of Baby Huey
SAN FRANCISCO—Sonny Barger seemed to be wiping tears from his eyes. He looked over at his attorney, blinking, and started to grin. The two men shook hands. Penny Cooper, another lawyer, was moving to each of the four men in turn, giving each a congratulatory peck on the cheek. After seven weeks, it was over in a rush; Sonny Barger and three of his key lieutenants in the Hell’s Angels were found by a jury to be innocent of murdering Severo Agero, a fumbling Brownsville, Texas, dope dealer whose body was found in the bathtub of a burning Hayward, California, house last May. Barger and the others would remain in jail under heavy bail, awaiting trial on other charges related to drug dealing, but whatever hopes State Attorney General Evelle Younger had of this case decapitating what he claims is a key criminal syndicate in California appeared to be being dismissed along with the jury. Prosecutor Donald Whyte sat grimly at the opposite side of the courtroom. His case had collapsed when the … [Read more...] about Angels in Court: The Strange Tale of Baby Huey
