Out in the jungle, no one can hear you dragging a body around. Mind you, nobody notices much what you do in the city, either. Colombian director Andres Ramirez Pulido ’s debut feature, La Jauria , screening in Critics’ Week at Cannes, opens with a grab-bag of images familiar from current Latin American cinema — a couple of teenage boys in neon-lit urban darkness, some elaborate sniffing and nose-wiping, a bike that shouts “stolen” as they careen down a highway — but soon detours into stranger and much more remote territory. One thing you can be sure of: wherever they are, these boys are going to be in trouble. Where they are, once that opening sequence has set a scene that will immediately be ripped from beneath our feet, is mysterious. Eliu (Jhojan Estiven Jiminez) previously seen under a streetlight with a bottle in his hand, is one of a gang working around a decrepit hacienda, emptying a stagnant swimming pool of weeds under the sun before going into a clearing to … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Andres Ramirez Pulido’s ‘La Jauria’

Matthew McConaughey Says We ‘Must Do Better’ After School Shooting in His Texas Hometown
Matthew McConaughey , who was born in Uvalde, Texas, seemed to call for stricter gun control laws without expressly saying so in a statement following yesterday’s mass shooting at an elementary school in his hometown. “Once again we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us,” McConaughey wrote in a statement shared on social media. “The true call to action now is for every American to take a longer and deeper look in the mirror, and ask ourselves, ‘What is it that we truly value? How do we repair the problem? What small sacrifices can we individually take today, to preserve a healthier and safer nation, state, and neighborhood tomorrow?’ We cannot exhale once again, make excuses, and accept these tragic realities as the status quo.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Matthew McConaughey (@officiallymcconaughey) Though clearly distraught and … [Read more...] about Matthew McConaughey Says We ‘Must Do Better’ After School Shooting in His Texas Hometown
Cannes Review: Saeed Roustaee’s ‘Leila’s Brothers’
They all hate one another, Leila (the magnificent Taraneh Alidoosti) tells her brother Alireza (Navid Mohammad Zadeh) when he returns to the family home. It is a rare visit; he works in an industrial plant somewhere on the other side of Iran. He isn’t going to tell his family that he has been laid off with the promise of pay that has never materialized; in the Tehran family that crowds Saeed Roustaee ’s long and absorbing clan drama Leila’s Brothers , he is supposed to be the properly functioning son. What can you say about the other three brothers in this Cannes competition film? There is Manouchehr (Payman Maadi) who, as they all like to say, thinks with his pectorals. Parvis (Farhad Aslani) is very fat and a heavy drinker; they all expect him to die any day, though he does seem to keep fathering children successfully. Farhad (Mohammad Ali Mohammadi) is a shyster who could barely lie straight in bed, which might have something to do with why his wife is divorcing him, taking … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Saeed Roustaee’s ‘Leila’s Brothers’

Kate Moss To Testify In Johnny Depp’s Trial Against Amber Heard
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial is getting uglier with each passing day. After hearing the testimony of Amber Heard's sister Whitney, Depp's legal team will reportedly be calling British model Kate Moss to testify this week in the Depp-Heard trial. A source close to the actor told Yahoo Entertainment that Moss will be appearing in the court via video call. For the unversed, earlier while recalling an incident during her testimony, Amber Heard had said, "I see my little sister with her back to the staircase ... I don't hesitate, I don't wait, I just instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs and I swung at him." Well, rumours stated that Johnny Depp had pushed Kate Moss down a flight of stairs. Celebrity Lawyer Chris Melcher explained to the portal that Heard herself opened the door for Depp's team to bring Kate on as a witness. Melcher further said, "Amber did not tell the jury what she meant by her reference to Kate. It appears Amber is … [Read more...] about Kate Moss To Testify In Johnny Depp’s Trial Against Amber Heard
Herschel Walker’s Response to the Uvalde Shooting Was Incoherent. So Is His Senate Bid
“What I like to do is see it and everything and stuff.” This is how Hershel Walker responded on Tuesday night when asked about gun control in the wake of a shooter killing 21 people, including 19 children, at an Uvalde, Texas, elementary school hours earlier. Asked if he believes there should be new gun laws in the wake of the Texas shooting, Georgia Senate GOP nominee Herschel Walker told me in ATL: “What I like to do is see it and everything and stuff.” He didn’t engage further. pic.twitter.com/wpsAZ7yKP5 — Manu Raju (@mkraju) May 25, 2022 The hollow incoherence on display here is sadly typical of the man Georgia’s Republican voters just deemed worthy of representing them in the Congress. Walker is best known for his Heisman Award-winning turn at the University of Georgia, followed by a relatively lackluster career in the NFL. He hasn’t done much since that would indicate he’d be a capable public servant. He has, however, pledged his allegiance to Trump and … [Read more...] about Herschel Walker’s Response to the Uvalde Shooting Was Incoherent. So Is His Senate Bid
Kevin Spacey, James Franco, and More Are Trying to Make Comebacks at Cannes
From a cramped hotel suite in a luxury Cannes hotel, a pair of film executives are trying to pull off an unlikely feat: Sell distribution rights to Kevin Spacey ’s comeback film. On May 17, Vantage Media International, or VMI, a Hollywood-based company that sells movies primarily to foreign markets, screened a finished print of the noir drama Peter Five Eight to would-be buyers willing to take a gamble on the two-time Oscar winner’s first leading role since his career came to a grinding halt in 2017 amid accusations of sexual misconduct. “The feedback is very good. People say it’s a quality film,” says VMI president of sales J.D. Beuafils. “But it’s really, really early on [in the deal-making].” In a room filled with marketing materials for VMI films like Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon and the Sam Worthington-Machine Gun Kelly Western The Last Son , the company’s COO Jessica Bennett offers an equally vague assessment when asked if the … [Read more...] about Kevin Spacey, James Franco, and More Are Trying to Make Comebacks at Cannes
