Harry Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ is a Smooth, Sensitive Step Forward For One of Pop’s Most Likable Stars
When Harry Styles left the U.K. boy band One Direction he was eager to prove his musical ambition and historical knowledge. His debut 2017 single was the brazenly enormous Bowie/Queen-style ballad “Sign of the Times.” An artist in his position could’ve come off as insecure or overreaching, but Styles has relaxed with winning ease into his role as a gender-fluid, genre-fluid megastar, a new-look rock & roll gentleman who can flip from guitar raunch to soul to soft rock and convincingly pull off a come-on like “I know that you’re scared because I’m so open.” He’s a Mick Jagger for our more enlightened age. With his third album, Harry’s House, due this Friday, he’s pulled off the neat trick of making his music at once elegant and more refined but also warmer and more intimate — the polished-marble smoothness of Steely Dan with the generosity of an Al Green or Yo La Tengo record. Harry’s House is bright with synths and horns, often steeped in slick, sticky synth-pop and … [Read more...] about Harry Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ is a Smooth, Sensitive Step Forward For One of Pop’s Most Likable Stars

Doocy and Psaki exchanged sentiments at a May 5 briefing in the White House press room.. “Sorry to see you go,” Doocy said from his seat. “Are you?” Psaki asked from the podium, which Doocy affirmed. Psaki did not share the photo of herself with … [Read more...] about White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki And Fox News’ Peter Doocy Lay Down Their Weapons

‘SNL’: Selena Gomez Talks ‘Only Murders’, Impersonates Miley Cyrus, Sings ‘Barney’ Song In Opening Monologue
Selena Gomez tonight made her debut as host of Saturday Night Live , speaking in her opening monologue about the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building , which has her starring alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, and more. Gomez opened her monologue by noting that growing up, she’d watch the late-night show with her mother every week. “This is a big moment for me,” she said. “I actually started acting when I was seven, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some Hollywood icons, [like] Steve Martin, Martin Short and, of course, Barney.” We then cut to a shot of the actress with the purple dinosaur from one of her appearances on the children’s show Barney & Friends back in the early 2000s. “That was the first show I was on, and now I’m on a show called Only Murders in the Building ,” noted Gomez. “I was so honored to work with Steve Martin and Martin Short, especially after I googled them to find out who they were.” Gomez recalled that when she … [Read more...] about ‘SNL’: Selena Gomez Talks ‘Only Murders’, Impersonates Miley Cyrus, Sings ‘Barney’ Song In Opening Monologue
Steve Martin Crashes ‘Only Murders’ Co-Star Selena Gomez’s ‘SNL’ Debut For Sketch On Whoopie Cushion Inventor
Steve Martin crashed his Only Murders co-star Selena Gomez’s first episode as host of SNL , for a pre-taped sketch on whoopie cushion inventor, Archie Gizmo. The segment on Martin’s fictional inventor came as part of the show American Inventors , hosted by Taylor Gosh (Gomez). “The automobile, paper cup, dancing, computer. These were all invented. But who did that, and what is their story?” Gosh wonders up top. “We begin with Archie Gizmo, the brilliant inventor of the whoopie cushion.” We then cut to Gizmo himself, who explains that back in the early ’60s, he was just a “struggling gag inventor,” who had thus far created only an early prototype of the whoopie cushion. “I knew it would be funny to have your boss sit down and [have] a noise come from his butt,” said Gizmo, “but I just couldn’t figure out what noise.” Helping the inventor to crack the case is Ms. Dina Beans (Aidy Bryant), a woman he sees from afar at a party. “Her energy was magnetic; her eyes … [Read more...] about Steve Martin Crashes ‘Only Murders’ Co-Star Selena Gomez’s ‘SNL’ Debut For Sketch On Whoopie Cushion Inventor
‘SNL’ Mockingly Sh*ts The Bed In Johnny Depp Vs. Amber Heard Trial Cold Open
There’s been a lot of defecation slung around the past few weeks in Johnny Depp ’s ongoing $50 million defamation trial against Amber Heard . Tonight, Saturday Night Live threw some of its own against the wall to see what would stick in the cold open. “I felt very very sad,” Said a bearded and ponytailed Kyle Mooney as a grinning Depp on the stand when asked by a lawyering Aidy Bryant what was his reaction to discovering “fecal matter in your bed.” Hearing frequent objections from cast member Heidi Gardner as Heard’s main lawyer Elaine Bredehoft over the messy line of questioning Judge Penny Azcarte, played on SNL by a bespectacled Cecily Strong, put the whole cold open and the whole real-life trial in perspective. “I’ll allow it because it does sound fun, and this trial is for fun,” Strong’s Judge Azcarte exclaimed in what was one of best takes on the move star legal dust-up and one of the best SNL cold opens this almost over 47th season. “We don’t have to … [Read more...] about ‘SNL’ Mockingly Sh*ts The Bed In Johnny Depp Vs. Every year around this time – Saturday Night Live ’s finale is May 21 – the rumor mill starts as to how the venerable comedy variety series will look next year. In a longform interview with Michael Che in the New York Times, Lorne Michaels hinted that this off season might be busier than recent years. The creator and exec producer said that a “year of change” was possible. However, he hoped that Che, who this season became the person with the second most appearances behind the Weekend Update desk, overtaking Seth Meyers, would be a part of that change. “If I had my way, he’ll be here,” Michaels told the NY Times . “And I don’t always get my way. But when you have someone who’s the real thing, you want to hold on as long as you can.” Head writer Che himself, who joined SNL in 2013 and became a featured player in 2014, discussed his future with the paper. “My head has been at leaving for the past five seasons,” he said. “I do think that I’ve been here … [Read more...] about ‘SNL’: Lorne Michaels Hints At “Year Of Change” As Michael Che Discusses Future
