California Governor Gavin Newsom Chooses Big Political Donors To Run State’s Vaccination Program

· February 16, 2021 ·

California said late Monday that Blue Shield had been chosen as the state’s third-party administrator for vaccine distribution. Gov. Gavin Newsom has been promising for weeks to release details of the contract, the details of which were made public yesterday, a holiday — the same day the no-bid contract went into effect. Under the contract, an algorithm created by Blue Shield will sort out vaccine distribution across California. The Newsom administration will have final say on where vaccines are distributed and what the criteria determine how many vaccines go to each site. Blue Shield stands to earn up to $15 million, a sum that is capped in the contract. The deal with Blue Shield and another with Kaiser were authorized by Newsom under an emergency provision that does not require legislative approval. The governor announced the deal late last month, but the contract was not signed until Friday. Terms of the contract run until December 31, 2021. It is not the first time the facility has had issues. “The deficiencies identified by Laboratory Field Services, although they are taken very seriously, do reflect that we established the laboratory on an accelerated timeframe, and we knew that there might be growing pains that would require work and process improvements,” said Health and … [Read more...] about Significant Deficiencies Uncovered In $120M Covid-19 Testing Facility Opened By California Governor Gavin Newsom In October

California Governor Gavin Newsom Makes Covid-19 Missteps As He Faces Recall, New Republican Challenger

· February 8, 2021 ·

California Governor Gavin Newsom was half an hour late to his own party on Monday. Scheduled to speak at a Covid-19 news conference at 11:30 pm, he didn’t appear until noon. That’s unlike the governor, but this is an unusual time for him. Newsom is the target of a statewide recall effort, and activists working to put his removal to a vote say that they have garnered 1.3 million of the estimated 1.5 million signatures needed. TV ads targeting Newsom are set to hit this week. Also on Monday, a new Republican challenger, businessman John Cox, who Newsom beat handily in the last election, declared his intention to challenge the governor in the proposed recall election if it qualifies for the ballot, or says he will run against Newsom if he seeks a second term in 2022. Cox again threw his hat into the ring on Monday with an ad painting himself as an outsider.
