The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is instituting sweeping changes to the Oscars broadcast as it tries to find ways to bolster ratings for the flagging telecast. In a message to its membership, the group’s president John Bailey and its CEO Dawn Hudson said the broadcast will now include a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film. That’s changed. Recent best picture victors such as “Moonlight,” “Spotlight,” and the 2017 winner “The Shape of Water” have been firmly ensconced in the arthouse world, whereas well-reviewed hit films such as “Guardians of the Galaxy” or “Star Wars: The Force … [Read more...] about The Academy is adding a popular film category to the Oscars — which will only be three hours!

UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIF. – James Foley spilled the thought offhandedly. “It’s this funny kind of thing,” he said. “What do you pay attention to? And what do you ignore?” He was sitting in a spartan, windowless editing room on the Universal Studios lot last year. On a set of screens behind him was an image of stubbled, sharp-jawed man in a crisp white shirt and a young, lingerie-clad woman with porcelain skin and a Mona Lisa smile. Foley, a director whose work is lodged in the zeitgeist of the ’80s (Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” video) and ’90s (David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross”), was finishing work on a pair of movies that would go on to be smashingly successful and widely smeared: “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed,” the second and third installments in the erotica-romance “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy. But Foley isn’t talking movies. His muse … [Read more...] about ‘Fifty Shades’ casts the attention of Hollywood back on Foley

For example, Samuel L. Jackson has a requirement in his contracts that he must be allowed to play golf at least twice a week while working on a project, while Queen Latifah has an “anti-death” clause in her contracts that means her character cannot be killed off. While the tides are changing in Hollywood – with women demanding to be taken seriously for the atrocities they have been forced to deal with for decades while simultaneously proving to be a major box office draw (we see you, Wonder Woman) – the number of female leads in movies actually went down in 2017.Gal Gadot had an incredibly successful 2017. Wonder Woman was a box office smash, boosting the beloved role model to the top spot as Hollywood’s highest-paid actress. Director Patty Jenkins managed to translate Wonder Woman‘s success into her own pay raise. Girls Trip dominated the box office, while Lady Bird made a splash on the award season circuit. And, of course, there was the ultimate homage paid when Time Magazine decided to give “The Silence Breakers” the honorable title of Person of the Year. But despite all this apparent progress, 2017 was just another example of … [Read more...] about Fewer Hollywood Movies Had Female Leads in 2017
