How Guns N’ Roses Formed

· March 8, 2021 ·

Guns N’ Roses did not arrive fully formed on L.A.’s Sunset Strip, howling “Sweet Child o’ Mine” with all the might and charisma that made the song a hit in 1988. They only achieved the proper cocktail of sensitivity and machismo after the five musicians in GN’R’s classic lineup found each other in the mid-Eighties. Long before any of them had even dreamt of the songs on Appetite for Destruction, Indiana natives Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin were cutting their teeth in the bands Axl, Hollywood Rose, and L.A. Guns. Eventually, they united with guitarist Slash , bassist Duff McKagan , and drummer Steven Adler under the GN’R banner and made history, but it was a long road to get there. The thing the musicians remember most about their salad days now is the determination they had simply to book small gigs at the Troubadour and Gazzari’s. Related How 'Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?' Women in Music Dwindled in 2020

· March 8, 2021 ·

Same song, different verse — quite literally, it turns out. On Monday (March 8th), the University of South California’s Annenberg Institute released its latest report on music creator demographics, finding that women still make up meager percentages of artists, songwriters, and producers on music charts and award-nomination slates, marking “no meaningful and sustained increase” in the number of female musicians in the male-governed music-making business in close to a decade. The fourth annual report , conducted by USC ’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative with funding from Spotify, examined the gender and race of artists, songwriters, producers, and other creators across 900 top songs in the last nine years; across 2012 to 2020, women comprised a total 21.6% of all artists, 12.6% of all songwriters, and 2.6% of all producers. Researchers Stacy Smith, Katherine Pieper, Marc Choueiti, Karla Hernandez, and Kevin Yao parsed data from the Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts and the Grammy … [Read more...] about Women in Music Dwindled in 2020

The Best Flannel Shirts for Channeling Every Style, from Grunge to Cool Lumber Jack

When you think of flannel, the humble plaid shirt usually comes to mind. The word “flannel” though, refers to the soft wool or cotton fabric designed in a range of prints and patterns (not just plaid) — and these days, the popular checked button-down is one of the most versatile pieces out there. Just like the cardigan , the plaid garment’s story begins centuries ago in Europe. The material originated in Wales, where it was spun from the sheep-rich country’s plentiful supply of wool, and rubbed with a fine metal brush to create a texture that was soft and warm enough to wear in the winter. Mass production during the Industrial Revolution brought the already affordable silhouette to even more people, and it eventually hopped across the pond to America’s chilliest west coast … [Read more...] about The Best Flannel Shirts for Channeling Every Style, from Grunge to Cool Lumber Jack

King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, Toyah Willcox Cover Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’

· March 8, 2021 ·

King Crimson ’s Robert Fripp and singer/actress Toyah Willcox dropped a cover of Britney Spears ’ “Toxic” and showed their support for Spears in her ongoing conservatorship fight . The cover was part of the couple’s quarantine series, “Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch,” and found them ripping through Spears’ 2003 hit in what looked to be their kitchen. Fripp deftly recreated the lead synth riff of “Toxic” with some lightning-quick guitar playing, while Willcox delivered a delightfully over-the-top vocal performance. In an explicit nod to Spears’ ongoing conservatorship battle, the video featured a prominent #FreeBritney hashtag, while after the performance, both Fripp and Willcox held up handmade “We Love You Britney” signs. (There’s also a bonus blooper clip at the end of Fripp and Willcox getting distracted midway through the performance and cracking up.) Fripp and Willcox launched their Sunday Lunch series last year, starting with a variety of little bits and … [Read more...] about King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, Toyah Willcox Cover Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’
