Doha Film Institute Pioneers Series Lab As MENA Indie Film Producers Push Into Drama In Untapped Region

March 22, 2023 by deadline.com

Lamia Chraibi is one of Morocco’s best-known indie film producers whose credits include Mica , about a boy from the slums who is discovered to have a talent for tennis, and Sitges prize-winning horror Achoura as well as co-producing 2016 Cannes Critics’ Week winner Las Mimosas . The Franco-Moroccan producer, who works under the banner of La Prod in Casablanca and Moons a Deal in Paris, is now attempting to break into drama series. It is a transition that has been tried and tested by indie film producers in Europe and North America but is less common in the Middle East and North Africa . Chraibi is giving it a shot in the belief that North African drama could eventually enjoy the same popularity as the non-English language shows out of Scandinavia, Turkey or South Korea. “I’m convinced that they could seduce audiences in the same way,” she says. “Language and origin of a series is no longer an issue, if anything, there’s an appetite to see stories set in … [Read more...] about Doha Film Institute Pioneers Series Lab As MENA Indie Film Producers Push Into Drama In Untapped Region

‘Westworld’ Co-Creator Lisa Joy On How The HBO Smash “Went From Sci-Fi To Documentary” Through The Seasons – Series Mania

March 22, 2023 by deadline.com

The issues Westworld was exploring went from “sci-fi to documentary film” through the years, according to co-creator Lisa Joy , who hinted at what a fifth season of the HBO smash could have looked like. Delivering a Series Mania keynote, Joy said that advances in AI and the invention of ChatGPT mean that Westworld’s subject matter has become more relevant and contemporaneous of late. “These topics will continue to be explored if not in Westworld then in other series, taking [the topic] to new levels,” she said, in conversation with Deadline. “I think it’s an area rife with possibility.” Westworld was canceled by HBO Max after four seasons late last year and both Joy and co-creator Jonathan Nolan have said they would have liked it to continue for a fifth and final instalment. Roku and Tubi have since picked up the show’s back catalog. Throughout the series, which lasted for six years from 2016, Joy explained the issues Westworld was exploring “went … [Read more...] about ‘Westworld’ Co-Creator Lisa Joy On How The HBO Smash “Went From Sci-Fi To Documentary” Through The Seasons – Series Mania

AFM Moving HQ To Santa Monica’s Le Meridien Delfina

March 22, 2023 by deadline.com

The American Film Market will be moving to a new home for this year’s edition, setting up shop at Santa Monica’s Le Méridien Delfina Hotel on Pico Blvd. The shift slightly to the south east comes as the Loews Hotel, where the AFM has been staged for 30 years, closed for lengthy renovations earlier this month. The AFM runs from October 31-November 5. Organizers said the move to the Méridien “will provide a new look for the AFM and a dynamic and innovative backdrop for you and your company to unite with the global film industry, showcase and discover the latest projects and offerings, connect with partners and engage in conversations about marketplace insights and trends.” Although the new venue is not beachfront, it does offer views of the Pacific, but it will mean more time required to get to lunch at The Ivy or grab a steak at Chez Jay. AFM organizers are “delighted that our new location means you will be returning to the same sunny beachside city for AFM 2023, to … [Read more...] about AFM Moving HQ To Santa Monica’s Le Meridien Delfina

Wim Wenders, Afsun Moshiry Unveil Six Iranian Docs At CPH:DOX As Iran’s Regime Continues Crackdown On Filmmakers

March 22, 2023 by deadline.com

Whenever the Iranian regime feels threatened by public protest its reflex is to go after two groups: demonstrators, most assuredly, but also artists – especially filmmakers. When protests surged in six provinces in May last year over rising food prices, the government promptly banged on the doors of two documentary filmmakers, Mina Keshavarz and Firouzeh Khosrovani, and arrested them. For good measure, law enforcement agents reportedly harassed numerous other filmmakers, seizing their communications equipment. The May unrest appears mild compared to the uproar triggered in September 2022 by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab in accordance with law. Security forces have attacked and killed an unknown number of demonstrators in the course of months of protests. The government also responded with an immediate clamp down on leading figures in Iranian cinema, detaining or imprisoning Jafar Panahi, Mohammad … [Read more...] about Wim Wenders, Afsun Moshiry Unveil Six Iranian Docs At CPH:DOX As Iran’s Regime Continues Crackdown On Filmmakers

‘Trunk’: Amazon Prime Video Greenlights High-Octane German Feature

March 22, 2023 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE: A backpacker’s battle to escape the locked boot of a car and regain her memory is to be the plot of Amazon Prime Video ’s latest German movie. In high-octane thriller Trunk (working title), Sina Martens ( The Perfumier, Tatort) will play Malina, who wakes up disoriented to discover to her horror that she is missing more than her memory. With her mobile phone as her only link to the outside world, she wages a desperate battle for survival as the vehicle races inexorably towards a terrible mystery. Even if she makes it – she will never be the same. The movie has echoes of claustrophobic single-location action features such as Ryan Reynolds’ Buried and is being produced by German indie Outside the Club. Marc Schießer is writing, directing and producing and Tobias Lohf will also produce. Amazon Head of German Originals Philip Pratt said Trunk will “take viewers on a wild ride through all the emotions.” He told Deadline more movies “in this realm” could … [Read more...] about ‘Trunk’: Amazon Prime Video Greenlights High-Octane German Feature

March 22, 2023 by deadline.com

BFI Distribution has picked up Tilda Swinton and Joanna Hogg ’s latest collaboration, The Eternal Daughter , for theatrical release in the UK and Ireland. The pic will hit cinemas this autumn and form the centerpiece of a Joanna Hogg retrospective season hosted at BFI Southbank that will also include a programme of films that have influenced her work. The Eternal Daughter is the BFI’s second acquisition from A24, following the Irish drama God’s Creatures, starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson earlier this year. The film also marks Hogg and Swinton’s third collaboration following the acclaimed two-part Souvenir series, which starred Swinton’s daughter Honor Swinton Byrne. Written and directed by Hogg with Martin Scorsese once again on board as Executive Producer, the film follows an artist and her elderly mother who confront long-buried secrets when they return to a former family home, now a hotel haunted by its mysterious past. Afroman Sued by Ohio Sheriff’s Deputies Who Raided His Home

March 22, 2023 by www.tmz.com

TMZ.com Afroman is being dragged to court by the same Ohio sheriff's deputies who searched his home ... because the deputies are pissed the rapper's using footage from the raid to make money. Several deputies and sergeants are suing Afroman, claiming he's using videos and pictures from the August raid at his Ohio home in music videos, and selling merchandise with their images. According to the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, the deputies claim Afroman was not home at the time of the raid , but his wife was in the home and she whipped out a cell phone and recorded the search. The officers also claim Afroman's home was full of security cameras, which also recorded deputies during the raid. Their main gripe is this ... deputies didn't give Afroman permission to use the footage in music videos, or to slap their faces on merch ... and he's profiting off their images and likenesses. In the suit, the officers say Afroman's music videos, … [Read more...] about Afroman Sued by Ohio Sheriff’s Deputies Who Raided His Home
