The Broadway-bound comedy Fat Ham and Shakespeare in the Park’s Merry Wives are among this year’s recipients of the 66th Obie Awards honoring Off and Off-Off Broadway productions. Presented by the American Theatre Wing, the Obies will be handed out Monday evening in a ceremony at Manhattan’s Terminal 5 venue. Sustained and Lifetime Achievement winners will accept their awards during the ceremony, while remarks of all other winners will premiere on the the American Theatre Wing’s YouTube channel. Jussie Smollett Appeals Conviction On 2019 Hate Crime Hoax
Former Empire star Jussie Smollett has filed an appeal of his 2021 conviction for faking a hate-crime attack in Chicago in early 2019. “The renewed prosecution of Mr. Smollett violated his due process rights,” attorney Heather Widell wrote in the court document filed Thursday (read it here ), “because (1) Mr. Smollett fully performed his part of a non-prosecution agreement with the state by performing community service and forfeiting his $10,000 bail bond; and (2) the state benefited from taking and keeping Mr. Smollett’s bail bond without performing its end of the bargain. ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Gets September Premiere Date On CBS & CBS All Access, Season 1 Split In Two
Star Trek: Discovery will debut Sunday, September 24, with a special broadcast premiere on the CBS TV network airing 8:30-9:30 PM. The first as well as the second episode of the sci-fi series will be available on-demand on CBS All Access immediately following the broadcast premiere, with subsequent new episodes released on All Access each Sunday. Originally slated for a January 2017 premiere , Star Trek: Discovery ‘s debut was first pushed to May and then to fall 2017. At CBS’ upfront presentation, the company announced that Star Trek: Discovery’s first-season order had been increased from 13 to 15 episodes . The expanded season now will be split into two. The first eight episodes will run Sundays from September 24 through November 5. The season then will resume with the second chapter in January 2018. The break also will allow the show more time for postproduction on latter episodes. “Office space?” Rainn Wilson has boarded CBS All Access ’ Star Trek: Discovery as a character known to fans of the original series. The Office alum, who earned three Emmy noms for his role as Dwight Schrute, will play conman and intergalactic criminal Harry Mudd, Roger C. Carmel originated the character, aka Harcourt Fenton Mudd, in the 1960s Star Trek series, appearing in one episode of each of the first two seasons. CBS has dropped the official trailer for its anticipated Star Trek: Discovery reboot. It was unveiled during the network’s upfront presentation, where it was announced that the order for the CBS All Access series was being increased to 15 episodes up from the original 13, and the series will be getting a companion show Talking Trek . The trailer sets the table for what is a prequel to the voyages of the USS Enterprise, when Commander Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) gets her own command of the Discovery. David Semel is set to direct and executive produce the opening episode of the upcoming Star Trek reboot series.
