If you happened to be scrolling through Twitter last week, you may have noticed #MonkeypoxIsAirborn trending. The hashtag revealed a fierce debate over the transmissibility of monkeypox , and what measures the general public should be taking to protect themselves against an outbreak that on Thursday was declared a public health emergency . Shortly after it began trending, Twitter pulled the hashtag from the “What’s Happening” sidebar. A representative from the platform told Rolling Stone that the trend was “temporarily removed” for review, and that Twitter is working with “public health authorities, NGOs and governments, and other authoritative sources to elevate credible info and add context to content across the service” in order to curb the spread of misinformation on the platform. But it wasn’t just this one instance. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, social media has come under intense scrutiny for the role that it plays in disseminating potential … [Read more...] about What the Hell Is Happening With Monkeypox?

It’s a good thing that the songwriting collective known as the Love Junkies — composed of Lori McKenna, Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey — is a democracy. Otherwise, Little Big Town might not be releasing their much buzzed-about current single, “Girl Crush.” Periodically, McKenna — a mother of five from Stoughton, Massachusetts, who has had hits with several artists including Hunter Hayes and Faith Hill — flies down to Nashville where she, Lindsey and Rose hole up at Rose’s house with food, wine and guitars. Since their inception, the Love Junkies — who have all had success independently — have written several songs together, including others cut by Little Big Town including “Sober” from 2012’s Tornado and “Tumble and Fall” and “Save Your Sin” from the quartet’s current release, Pain Killer . One morning earlier this year, McKenna tested out the “Girl Crush” title on Rose. “She gave me this look like she just hated it,” recalls McKenna, who kept arguing for the idea. “She said, … [Read more...] about Lori McKenna Reveals Her ‘Girl Crush’
EXCLUSIVE: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to the edge-of-your-seat documentary thriller Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche , a “gripping account of the deadliest avalanche in U.S. ski resort history.” Greenwich plans to release the documentary — winner of the Audience Award at Telluride’s Moutainfilm festival – in theaters in New York, San Francisco and Northern California on September 23, expanding to additional markets thereafter. A 45-day exclusive theatrical window will be followed by a release on TVOD/EST (transactional video on demand/electronic sell-through) and DVD on November 8. Jared Drake and Steven Siig directed the film, which takes viewers back to the catastrophic events of March and April 1982 near Lake Tahoe, California. A massive storm had dumped huge quantities of snow onto the area beginning in late March. There’s a moment in the pilot of Yellowjackets — Showtime’s Nineties-nostalgia-evoking, deeply disturbing cult-hit about a group of high school soccer players who survive a plane crash in the Ontario wilderness — when one of the survivors, Shauna (played by Melanie Lynskey), meets another, Taissa (Tawny Cypress) at a diner. A housewife so profoundly bored by her day-to-day routine that she masturbates to her daughter’s boyfriend’s photo, Shauna has just been approached by a reporter asking to tell her story about her time in the wilderness, which we already know from ominously lit flashbacks of a terrified girl being hunted and then possibly roasted over an open fire was not particularly positive. “We agreed: Say no more than we have to, stay out of the public eye,” Shauna reminds Tai forebodingly. “If someone’s digging, we are all fucked. Take care of it.” A waitress arrives to refill her coffee. On a dime, Shauna reverts to a sunny, mild-mannered suburbanite, flashing … [Read more...] about Melanie Lynskey Is Mad as Hell and Not Going to Take It Anymore. Maybe.
Aubrey Marcus Podcast Aaron Rodgers says the secret to his recent NFL dominance is a psychedelic experience in South America ... claiming the ayahuasca plant helped him improve his mental health and have the "best season of my career." Ayahuasca -- which contains DMT -- has been used socially and medically for centuries ... and some consumers credit the plant brew for spiritual healing. The Super Bowl champ says it's not a "coincidence" he returned from South America and won his next two MVP awards in 2020 and 2021 ... and is speaking out to change the negative stereotypes around using ayahuasca. "I think there's so many myths and rumors about it," Rodgers said on the "Aubrey Marcus Podcast." "The fear around it is, you're going to s*** yourself, it's just a big throw-up fest ... but the negative framework of it is that is the experience, not the deep and meaningful and crazy mind-expanding possibilities and also deep self-love and healing that can happen … [Read more...] about Aaron Rodgers Credits Psychedelic Ayahuasca Plant For ‘Best Season Of My Career’
Two wide studio releases will hopefully prevent this summer from reaching another low at the box office after last weekend’s $67.3M. If there’s one movie that’s going to pull ahead, sources are betting on Crunchyroll ’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero . That distributor has proven in a short amount of time that they can draw a great deal of anime fans in a Friday through Sunday span. The Tetsuro Kodama directed animation movie is looking at anywhere from $12M-$15M , ahead of Universal ’s genre lion-stalking film, Beast , starring Idris Elba; that pic hoping for at least double digits. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, booked in around 3,940 theaters, will be armed with all premium ticket formats, i.e. 4DX, Imax, Dolby and D-box, and will kick off showtimes at 5PM on Thursday. The previous movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly , over a 6-day MLK holiday stretch in 2019 debuted to $22.3M. However, these anime movies are all about their first weekend, and in the … [Read more...] about ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ To Overpower Idris Elba’s ‘Beast’ At Weekend Box Office
T he black Cadillac pulls into the diner’s parking lot in Queens. Built in the 1950s, the building looks like it only exists on a rainy day, the rock-lined exterior out of another time. I step out of the Uber and look up at the restaurant where, in 1983, my father was arrested after escaping federal prison. He had spent two years on the lam, and was brought down by the U.S. Marshals after eating breakfast with his longtime mistress. He had just come from organizing a new shipment from Colombia. I imagine the day was also rainy. Almost 40 years later, I am there to meet with the Drug Enforcement Agency officer who tracked him for nearly a decade, trying to bring down one of the biggest mari juana kingpins of the 1970s, the man I once called “Daddy,” and one of the architects of the modern drug trade: Dan McGuiness. When the Cadillac arrived at my hotel, I had to laugh. The last time I saw my father, he, too, was driving a black Cadillac. He had just arrived in Los Angeles … [Read more...] about Learjets, Mistresses, and Bales of Weed: My Dad’s Life as a Drug Kingpin
