‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ Tops Broadway Box Office; ‘The Piano Lesson’ Closes On High Note

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

The long-running The Phantom of the Opera was once again Broadway’s highest grossing show last week, taking in a mighty $2,483,532 for the week ending Jan. 29, outpacing runners-up Funny Girl ($1,872,862) and Hamilton ($1,871,921) by a noticeable margin. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at the Majestic has experienced a remarkable resurgence in interest (and box office) since announcing a closing date last year (the final performance, after a 35-year run, is April 16). Earlier this month, Phantom reported its 20 millionth audience member since opening in 1988. Overall, the 23 Broadway shows on the boards last week held steady with the previous week, grossing $25,705,039, with attendance of 206,578 at about 94% of capacity. The average ticket price for all the shows was $124.43, reflecting the discount pricing of some shows during the annual NYC Broadway Week promotion (which continues through Feb. 12). In its final week of performances, August Wilson’s The … [Read more...] about ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ Tops Broadway Box Office; ‘The Piano Lesson’ Closes On High Note

Helena Bonham Carter Doesn’t Think ‘The Crown’ Should “Carry On” As Netflix Series Approaches Current Times

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

Helena Bonham Carter appeared in two seasons of The Crown and as the Netflix drama approaches current times, the actor feels that the series shouldn’t continue. Carter played the “spare” Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and was recently asked to comment on Prince Harry ’s book. “I don’t really want to contribute to the whole thing. It’s complicated and it’ll get taken out of context. And I think it’s been given enough attention,” Carter told The Guardian about Harry’s book titled “Spare.” Although Carter participated in The Crown , she doesn’t think the series should go forward saying, “I should be careful here too, but I don’t think they should carry on, actually. I’m in it and I loved my episodes, but it’s very different now. When The Crown started it was a historic drama, and now it’s crashed into the present. But that’s up to them.” The sixth season of The Crow n will take on Princess Diana’s death and is reportedly set to be the series last … [Read more...] about Helena Bonham Carter Doesn’t Think ‘The Crown’ Should “Carry On” As Netflix Series Approaches Current Times

‘Pathaan’ Director Siddharth Anand On Film’s Success, Bollywood Action Cinema & Future Projects

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

Yash Raj Films ’ action thriller Pathaan , starring Shah Rukh Khan , is shattering box office records, grossing 591 crore rupees ($73.6M) worldwide in just six days, with an impressive $27.56M coming from overseas. It’s a huge relief for the Bollywood film industry, which has had a string of flops or almost hits over the past few years, and disproves industry fears that the rise of OTT in India has killed the cinema star. Khan is back bigger than ever in his first major release since Zero in 2018. Deepika Padukone and John Abraham also star in the film, about an exiled spy working to take down a rogue agent who plans to release a deadly lab-generated virus across India. Pathaan director Siddharth Anand sat down with Deadline to discuss the film’s success, future projects and the development of action cinema in India. Anand’s credits also include War , starring Hrithik Roshan, a big hit in 2019, which along with Pathaan and the Tiger films starring Salman … [Read more...] about ‘Pathaan’ Director Siddharth Anand On Film’s Success, Bollywood Action Cinema & Future Projects

Johnny Knoxville On ‘Reboot’ Cancellation: “Pretty Unbelievable”

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

Johnny Knoxville has taken to social media to share his frustration over the cancellation of his critically acclaimed Hulu comedy series Reboot . “It’s with a heavy heart that I say despite getting great reviews and being nominated for a Critics Choice Award @hulu has failed to pick up Reboot even for a second season. Pretty unbelievable,” Knoxville wrote on Instagram Monday night, next to a cast photo. Thanking series creator Steve Levitan and cast “for allowing me to be part of this show,” which he says “has been one of the great highlights of my life,” Knoxville expressed some optimism. “It’s not over yet though, as we tend to shop it around and hopefully it will find a home with a studio who believes in and knows how to properly support a new show as it continues to grow,” Knoxville wrote. Hulu confirmed Monday it would not renew the comedy series for a second season, but as Deadline reported, Levitan hopes to shop it elsewhere. We hear that another … [Read more...] about Johnny Knoxville On ‘Reboot’ Cancellation: “Pretty Unbelievable”
