VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza
After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual. For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among the hordes of preteens angling for photo ops with their favorite creators (days later, several attendees of VidCon, which required proof of vaccination or a recent Covid test for entry, began reporting on social media that they had tested positive for COVID after the event). Perhaps most importantly, however, TikTok , the short-form video platform that dominated the app store starting in … [Read more...] about VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza
Pilots Are Airlifting Patients Out of Red States to Get Abortions
The patient’s first two appointments were canceled. When Oklahoma’s governor signed the nation’s strictest abortion ban into law on May 26, her third was moved from a Planned Parenthood in Oklahoma City to the closest clinic with an appointment roughly a 10-hour round trip drive away, in Kansas. (The local chapter, Planned Parenthood Great Plains, covers four states — Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas — and books patients across all four.) “It was a goddamn mess,” says Alison Dreith, director of strategic partnerships at Midwest Access Coalition, a Chicago-based abortion fund. A companion managed to book a rental car and get the patient to Kansas, where she expected to have a medication abortion. “When she got to Kansas,” Dreith says, “She was too far along for them to do a medication abortion. They rescheduled her because they didn’t have appointments that day for a surgical… which pissed me the fuck off because you had this person come all the way from Oklahoma, and now … [Read more...] about Pilots Are Airlifting Patients Out of Red States to Get Abortions

Even Fox News Is Calling Cassidy Hutchinson’s Jan. 6 Testimony ‘Devastating’
The news Tuesday was so bad for Donald Trump that even Fox News couldn’t find a way to spin it in his favor. “I’ve covered politics a long time,” Bret Baier said on the air. “I don’t think there has been testimony like this — that is kind of jaw-dropping, in a way — on the inside workings of a White House in crisis after, you know, at this moment, Jan. 6 , that we have seen since Watergate.” Baier was referring to testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson , a former aide to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows . Hutchinson was a surprise witness for the committee on Tuesday afternoon, who said that Meadows warned her on Jan. 2 that things could get “real, real bad on Jan. 6.” Fox anchor Bret Baier: "I've covered politics a long time. I don't think there has been testimony like this, kind of jaw-dropping in a way on the inside workings of a White House in crisis after, you know, at this moment, January 6th, that we have seen since Watergate, really." … [Read more...] about Even Fox News Is Calling Cassidy Hutchinson’s Jan. 6 Testimony ‘Devastating’
Beyoncé Is Probably Not Your Anti-Capitalist Savior
“I just quit my job,” Beyoncé sings — in character, of course — on her new, house-influenced single “ Break My Soul .” “They work me so damn hard/Work by nine, then off by past five/And they work my nerves/That’s why I cannot sleep at night.” Numerous fans on Twitter and elsewhere got excited — perhaps too excited — and declared it an “anti-capitalist anthem.” But as Mankaprr Conteh points out on the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now , it’s quite unlikely that Beyoncé — a monumentally successful artist and businesswoman whose husband has, needless to say, also seen more than his share of capitalist triumphs — has turned against the economic system in which she’s thrived. ( T o hear the whole episode, listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or press play above.) “I think that’s a stretch,” Conteh says. “It’s nice to think that Beyoncé is a voice for the everyday person who is struggling to make ends meet or struggling to thrive in a job that they may not love. … [Read more...] about Beyoncé Is Probably Not Your Anti-Capitalist Savior
She Sang ‘Gimme Shelter’ With the Rolling Stones. Then ‘Tina’ Producers Fired Her for It
When Chanel Haynes showed up at Milan’s San Siro Stadium to sing “Gimme Shelter” with the Rolling Stones on June 21, she had a lot on her mind: She had spent the past few months in London portraying Tina Turner in the West End production of Tina, and there was a show that night. But this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — alongside a good chance to cede the stage to her understudy — even though it would eventually cost her her day job. On the last-minute flight to Italy, she played several different renditions of “Gimme Shelter,” trying to figure out the best way to deliver Merry Clayton’s visceral vocals from the 1969 original. “I was perplexed,” Haynes tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from London. “I was thinking, ‘Do I do it the way Merry recorded it? Do I do it the way people are used to hearing it live? Do I do it my way?’ I knew that I just had one shot to execute.” All of these questions were swirling through her mind when drummer Steve Jordan greeted her and … [Read more...] about She Sang ‘Gimme Shelter’ With the Rolling Stones.
