For writer-director Dan Gilroy, Netflix was the perfect home for his latest film, Velvet Buzzsaw. Gilroy’s third entry as writer-director is a “satirical thriller" set in the contemporary art world of Los Angeles where collectors have leveraged artists and their art into big business. Velvet Buzzsaw reunites many of the creatives from 2014’s Nightcrawler, including lead actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, who is married to the filmmaker. Gyllenhaal plays esteemed art critic Morf Vandewalt, whose reviews can make-or-break an artist’s career while collectors, such as Russo’s Rhodora Haze, seemingly live by Morf’s every word. The film’s conflict comes from Haze’s associate, Josephina (Zawe Ashton), who stumbles upon a magnificent collection of art by a mysterious artist named Vetril Dease.
