Channel 5, Fable Pictures, and Sony Pictures Television have released a first-look image of Queen & Slim actress Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn in their convention-busting series on the Tudor monarch. The three-part series, first revealed by Deadline , will examine the downfall of Boleyn through the prism of a psychological thriller rather than a stuffy period drama retreading the demise of King Henry VIII’s second wife. Penned by newcomer Eve Hedderwick Turner, Anne Boleyn shines a feminist light on the final months of Boleyn’s life, re-imagining her struggle with Tudor England’s patriarchal society, her desire to secure a future for her daughter, Elizabeth, and the brutal reality of her failure to provide Henry with a male heir. Watergate drama Gaslit , which is based on Slate’s Slow Burn podcast, has landed at Starz , although its lost a couple of names along the way. The network has greenlit the UCP -produced series starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn . Joel Edgerton , who was set to star and direct is no longer attached, and neither is his brother Nash Edgerton. The pair join Armie Hammer, who was originally attached to the project, but also exited . The project was first unveiled in February 2020 . These two roles, Hammer was set to play White House Counsel John Dean and Edgerton was set to play G. Gordon Liddy chief operative of Richard Nixon’s “Plumbers” unit, will now be recast. Matt Ross, who has directed feature films including Captain Fantastic and 28 Hotel Rooms , will now direct and exec produce. Robbie Pickering, who has worked on series including Mr. Robot and Search Party , remains as showrunner. Julia Roberts is reuniting with Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail on another podcast adaptation as she is attached to star, alongside Sean Penn , Armie Hammer and Joel Edgerton , in a remake of Slate’s Watergate audio series Slow Burn . Roberts, who worked with Esmail on Amazon’s Homecoming , will play Martha Mitchell, wife of Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell in Gaslit from UCP . The NBCUniversal Content Studios division is taking out the project to premium and streaming platforms with talent attached in a similar fashion to the way it did with Dr Death , featuring Jamie Dornan, Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater, Dirty John , with Connie Britton, who was in negotiations, and Homecoming with Roberts. All of the above projects are based on podcasts, an important source of IP to the studio.
