Broken Bells — the duo of Brian Burton (a.k.a. Danger Mouse ) and Shins frontman James Mercer — are back with a new song, “We’re Not in Orbit Yet…” The track will appear on the duo’s upcoming album, Into the Blue . “We’re Not in Orbit Yet…” finds Broken Bells blending some folky, acoustic undertones with an array of spaced-out synths, creating a vibe that feels at once retro and futuristic. The song’s music video — directed by Johnny Chrew — matches that sonic vibe with grainy footage of Broken Bells interspersed with an eerie array of vintage sci-fi imagery. Broken Bells’ last full-length album, After the Disco , was released in 2014. Since then, the group has remained relatively quiet, though they have trickled out three songs in the intervening years: 2015’s “It’s That Talk Again,” 2018’s “Shelter,” and 2019’s “Good Luck.” Into the Blue , which will mark Broken Bells’ first album in eight years, doesn’t have an official release date or track list yet. But … [Read more...] about Broken Bells Return With Spaced-Out Ambitions on New Song ‘We’re Not in Orbit Yet’

Broken Bells Return to Intergalactic Disco on ‘It’s That Talk Again’
Broken Bells have shared a surprise new song, “It’s That Talk Again,” ahead of the premiere of of their concert film, Live at the Orpheum , airing Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on Palladia . The previously unreleased “It’s That Talk Again” was recorded during the sessions for Broken Bells ’ 2014 LP, After the Disco , and finds frontman James Mercer and Danger Mouse further exploring that album’s intergalactic dance floor vibe. Mercer’s vocals are often airy and delicate, complementing the song’s lithe, wafting synths; but the Shins frontman pushes towards the peak of his upper register as Danger Mouse’s propulsive disco beat and bounding elastic bass intensify. After the Disco arrived four years after Broken Bells’ self-titled debut , which was followed by an EP, Meyrin Fields , in 2011. The group spent much of last year touring in support of After the Disco , including festival sets at Coachella, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. Their new concert film, Live … [Read more...] about Broken Bells Return to Intergalactic Disco on ‘It’s That Talk Again’

VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza
After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual. For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among the hordes of preteens angling for photo ops with their favorite creators (days later, several attendees of VidCon, which required proof of vaccination or a recent Covid test for entry, began reporting on social media that they had tested positive for COVID after the event). Perhaps most importantly, however, TikTok , the short-form video platform that dominated the app store starting in … [Read more...] about VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza
