Oscar-nominee Hugh Jackman and Oscar-winner Laura Dern have been set to star in blue-chip feature drama The Son , writer-director Florian Zeller ’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated movie The Father . Oscar-winners Iain Canning and Emile Sherman ( The King’s Speech ), and Joanna Laurie of See-Saw Films , produce with Christophe Spadone ( The Father ) alongside Zeller. Film4 are co-financing production. Cross City Films and Embankment are launching international sales, with Cross City Films and CAA Media Finance co-representing U.S. rights. On a sunny Saturday in February, two policemen on a motorcycle stop Jhon Jairo “Popeye” Velásquez as he walks down the driveway of a dilapidated mansion near Medellin, Colombia. The estate belonged to a former associate of late drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who was killed in 1993, reportedly by Colombian police aided by U.S. Special Forces .. Velásquez, who worked for Escobar, is giving a tour of his old mob hangouts and discussing his future in film and politics. The beat cops aren’t here to arrest him. “We’re intrigued by him,” says the more boyish of the patrolmen, who was born the year Escobar was killed. “It’s really cool to hear the story.” If the officer had been born 20 years earlier, he might have been one of over 500 policemen Velásquez and other assassins from Escobar’s Medellín Cartel murdered in a bloody war against the Colombian government. The first image from Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation ’s Blush , has been released. The short film is the first, as part of an expansive multi-year partnership between the two studios. The film follows a stranded horticulturist-astronaut’s struggle for survival after he crash lands on a desolate dwarf planet. When an ethereal visitor arrives, the once-lone traveler discovers the joy in building a new life and realizes the universe has delivered astonishing salvation. The inaugural Apple/Skydance short film is written and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Joe Mateo. Mateo developed the movie alongside the Skydance Animation team and the film is produced by Heather Schmidt Feng Yanu and executive produced by John Lasseter. Televisa and Univision executives said a new global OTT service to launch early next year will roll up their current streaming offerings — including Prende TV , Vix and Blim — and that its content won’t overlap with Univision’s linear networks. They also revealed in a press call that John Malone’s Liberty Global is an investor in the new company called Televisa-Univison. As reported Tuesday evening, Univision will pay $4.8 billion for the content assets of Televisa , a Mexican production powerhouse that already was a minority owner of Univision. The two companies will create Televisa-Univision, which will be the largest player in Spanish-speaking media. Grupo Televisa will be the biggest stakeholder, owning 45%. Investment firms Searchlight and ForgeLight, founded by Univision CEO and former Viacom exec Wade Davis, will own 38%.
