Will Smith got double-ribbing at NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation Monday morning at Radio City Music Hall by both of NBC’s late-night hosts. Following Jimmy Fallon’s subtle reference at the start of the event to “nailing” the timing of Peacock’s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air drama reboot , whose run coincided with Will Smith’s infamous slap at the Oscars, Seth Meyers went further in his traditional NBCU upfront roast. “We are joined today by the talented cast of Peacock’s Bel-Air, a gritty dramatic reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air . “We were also treated this year to a gritty drama reimagining of Will Smith,” he said. Top Chef leads the field with five nominations for the fourth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, which were announced today. Netflix scooped a dozen noms to top all networks and platforms. Launched in 2019, the Critics Choice Real TV Awards celebrate programming across platforms and also recognize industry leaders with special awards highlighting career achievements. In 2021, the Cannes film festival programmed movies from an unprecedented number of women and people of color, more than in any other year. Director Julia Ducournau won the Palme d’Or for her film Titane , becoming only the second woman to do so. This win gave people hope that maybe change was coming from the white, male-dominated festival. But with the initial reveal of the Cannes lineup last month, it appeared things had gone back to the way they usually were, with women and POC content largely shut out. Subsequent additions to the slate included five films directed or co-directed by women in Competition for the first time. But is it enough? Change is happening slowly, but the years of exclusion have proven harmful to many filmmakers who exist on the margins, and few established voices seemed willing to speak up. Vangelis , whose instantly recognizable musical theme for 1981’s Chariots of Fire won an Oscar and became a sort of aural shorthand for tales of endurance and triumph, has died, according to his representatives. He was 79. His assistant Lefteris Zermas has confirmed the death but did not provide a specific cause, saying only that Vangelis died in a hospital in France. Greek newspaper OT is reporting that Vangelis was being treated for Covid-19. Born Evangelos Odessey Papathanassiou in Greece, the composer and musician known worldwide simply as Vangelis, combined orchestral music, electronic synth sounds, jazz and ambient to create a then-new sound for the film that seemed to provide the musical equivalent of the ocean waves that crashed as the story’s Olympic runners sprinted down the beach. Fox this morning announced the bulk of its programming slate for the 2022-23 but not a fall schedule. As Deadline reported two weeks ago, the network had been planning not to unveil a grid in conjunction with its May 16 upfront presentation. As broadcast networks have become a small part of media congloms’ portfolio pitch to advertisers, the fall schedules are no longer a centerpiece of their presentations and are sometimes omitted from the corporate upfronts altogether. But the broadcast networks still traditionally unveil their fall schedule the morning of their upfront presentation. Fox will announce its fall 2022-23 lineup to advertisers and the media soon, the network confirmed during an upfront press call Monday morning. Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose and Jennifer Jason Leigh have joined the cast of Chris Pine ’s directorial debut Poolman . They join the previously announced cast of Pine, Annette Bening and Danny DeVito. Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is fully financing the project, which it launched at EFM earlier this year, and will continue to shop to buyers on the Croisette this week. Writer and first-time feature director Nicholas Maggio’s film tells the story of a desperate and struggling family man who robs a pill mill. However, when the theft turns violent, he finds himself hunted by both the police and the Dixieland mafia. Filming just wrapped in Georgia with Saban Films looking at a 2023 release. Ukrainian filmmaker Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi wrote and will direct the feature adaptation of John Valliant’s book The Tiger , in which Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award-winner Alexander Skarsgard will star alongside Oppenheimer actor Dane DeHaan . Set in snowy far east Russia in the late 90s, the feature follows a group of men — referred to as the Tiger Team — who work to protect endangered tigers from poachers and logging operations. The story follows Vanzin (Skarsgard), the Team’s leader whose sense of duty is tested when he’s charged with hunting down and exterminating a tiger that killed a poacher in self-defense. DeHaan would portray Kanchuga, a young environmental scientist and newest member of the Team. Darren Aronofsky and Protozoa are producing, along with Plan B and Wild Bunch International. Kovacs, who was previously director of development at the production company set up by Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple, has been named head of development. It comes as Candy , the company’s Hulu true-crime limited series, which stars Biel as ax murderer Candy Montgomery and Melanie Lynskey as victim Betty Gore, hits its finale today. Kovacs has been with the company for over two years, having joined from Imagine Television, where she worked on shows including Hulu’s Wu Tang: An American Saga, Paramount+’s Why Women Kill and Apple’s Swagger .
