‘Joker’ Jumps Higher With $152M Overseas & $248M Global Bows, Smashes October Records – International Box Office

October 7, 2019 by deadline.com

2ND MONDAY UPDATE, writethru : Just as it has domestically , Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ Joker has come in higher in the overseas weekend actuals — and even higher than what we were hearing earlier this morning. A huge jump of $11.7M more than projected yesterday has lifted the international box office total to $152.2M through Sunday. With North America’s tally, the worldwide weekend gross grows to $248.2M . In the Sunday estimates (see below), Joker had already come in way ahead of cautious projections to break opening records for the month of October domestically, internationally and globally. With today’s updated figures, the origins story puts further distance between itself and last year’s Venom which was the previous record holder. Offshore, the Todd Phillips -directed character study set an October opening weekend record in 32 individual markets. Overall overseas, WB now also says there were 26.3M admissions on 25,090 screens … [Read more...] about ‘Joker’ Jumps Higher With $152M Overseas & $248M Global Bows, Smashes October Records – International Box Office

Michael Mann On The Long Odysseys of ‘Heat’ And ‘Ferrari’ – Toronto Q&A

September 16, 2015 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE : “So you write a story about a movie I’m not doing, and you make the first time Al Pacino and Robert De Niro share the screen together an afterthought?” That’s my recollection of the first words that Michael Mann ever said to me, after I wrote a Weekly Variety column about how he and Leonardo DiCaprio were scrapping their James Dean movie, and oh yeah, Mann would instead direct this crime drama called Heat . Boy, was Mann right. Last night in Toronto, he and cast members Pacino, De Niro, Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd celebrated the 20th anniversary of his seminal Los Angeles crime thriller, one that took about 20 years to go from script to screen. To honor the occasion, he took a trip down memory lane with Deadline, and filled us in on his next film, the one in which Christian Bale will play Italian automobile magnate Enzo Ferrari. That project is similar to Heat, each an epic-sized drama that took forever to solve the creative challenges. Re-watching Heat to … [Read more...] about Michael Mann On The Long Odysseys of ‘Heat’ And ‘Ferrari’ – Toronto Q&A

Desus Nice Fills In On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, Jokes About Being Fired By Showtime & Getting To Say “Whatever The F**k” He Wanted On Cable

August 15, 2022 by deadline.com

Desus Nice returned to late-night for the first time since his Showtime series ended. The comedian, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, was filling in as a guest host on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a month after it emerged that he had split up with late-night partner The Kid Mero and their show Desus & Mero was ending after four seasons. Desus didn’t spend too much time during his monologue talking about his former show, although it was clear that he’s still getting to used to hosting on his own rather than as part of a double act. He joked about the difference between broadcast TV and premium cable. “Listen, it’s weird to be hosting a show on network TV because I was on Showtime for the past four years, where they pretty much let you say what the f**k you want. Guillermo, can I say whatever the f**k I want on ABC?” Kimmel’s sidekick joked back, “I don’t think so, but you’re not coming back tomorrow so who gives a f**k.” Desus also got slightly more political … [Read more...] about Desus Nice Fills In On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, Jokes About Being Fired By Showtime & Getting To Say “Whatever The F**k” He Wanted On Cable

Learjets, Mistresses, and Bales of Weed: My Dad’s Life as a Drug Kingpin

August 7, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

T he black Cadillac pulls into the diner’s parking lot in Queens. Built in the 1950s, the building looks like it only exists on a rainy day, the rock-lined exterior out of another time. I step out of the Uber and look up at the restaurant where, in 1983, my father was arrested after escaping federal prison. He had spent two years on the lam, and was brought down by the U.S. Marshals after eating breakfast with his longtime mistress. He had just come from organizing a new shipment from Colombia. I imagine the day was also rainy. Almost 40 years later, I am there to meet with the Drug Enforcement Agency officer who tracked him for nearly a decade, trying to bring down one of the biggest mari juana kingpins of the 1970s, the man I once called “Daddy,” and one of the architects of the modern drug trade: Dan McGuiness. When the Cadillac arrived at my hotel, I had to laugh. The last time I saw my father, he, too, was driving a black Cadillac. He had just arrived in Los Angeles … [Read more...] about Learjets, Mistresses, and Bales of Weed: My Dad’s Life as a Drug Kingpin
