Legal docudrama Saint Omer was voted Best Picture at the 34 th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced this year’s juried award winners today. Saint Omer wins for its ability “to expertly interrogate issues of society, culture, race, and gender,” the festival release stated. “Alice Diop, as screenwriter and director, delivers a film that explores different dynamics of Black women in contemporary France, drawing empathetic lead performances from Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga (whose characters never interact, save for one momentous glance). By harnessing the skills of her technical team, Diop turns Saint Omer into a shrewd, cogent, ambitious, and overwhelming film which teases a metafictional awareness while remaining clear-eyed and unsentimental.” The Palm Springs festival took place from January 5-16 and screened 134 films from 64 countries, including 27 premieres. EXCLUSIVE : Taissa Farmiga ( The Gilded Age ) will exec produce and star in the Ukrainian drama Anna , from producer Uri Singer ( White Noise ). The film written and to be directed by Dekel Berenson is inspired by his same-name 2019 short, which premiered in competition at Cannes before going on to screen at TIFF and other major festivals. It’s a contemporary coming-of-age drama that follows Anna (Farmiga), a Ukrainian immigrant who is training to become a sergeant in the U.S. Army. After weeks at the military base, and as the Russian forces prepare to invade her home country, she’s sexually assaulted by another army officer. After returning to the base, she struggles to complete her course as she reconsiders her values, identity and place in an American army and society that’s not fighting for her, too. A new musical adaptation of the classic 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses will make its world premiere Off Broadway this May in an Atlantic Theater Company production starring Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James in the roles made famous by Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. With a book by Craig Lucas ( Prelude to a Kiss, Longtime Companion ) and music & lyrics by Adam Guettel ( Floyd Collins ), Days of Wine and Roses will begin previews on Friday, May 5, for a limited engagement through Sunday, June 25, at the Linda Gross Theater. Michael Greif ( Dear Evan Hansen, Next to Normal ) directs. Additional casting and an opening date will be announced at a later date.
