Ricky Gardiner, the guitarist who played stinging, obtuse leads throughout Davie Bowie’s iconic Low and Iggy Pop ’s rowdy Lust for Life , has died at age 73. Tony Visconti, who co-produced Low , reported the news on Facebook , saying that Gardiner’s wife, Virginia, had notified him of the guitarist’s death. Gardiner had been battling Parkinson’s at the time of his death. “Dearest Ricky, lovely, lovely man, shirtless in your coveralls, nicest guy who ever played guitar,” Iggy Pop wrote on Twitter . “Thanks for the memories and the songs, rest eternal in peace.” Gardiner’s otherworldly solos define Low’s first side, giving elasticity to “What in the World,” a slinkiness to “Sound and Vision,” and heroic drama to “Be My Wife.” On Pop’s Lust for Life , which Bowie co-produced, Gardiner wrote the eerie, skanking music that accompanies “The Passenger” and he and Bowie co-wrote the raffish music for the supremely cheeky “Success” and the … [Read more...] about Ricky Gardiner, David Bowie and Iggy Pop’s Berlin-Era Guitarist, Dead at 73

Broadway’s ‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘The Skin Of Our Teeth’ Cancel Weekend Performances Due To Covid
Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Lincoln Center Theater ’s The Skin of Our Teeth canceled performances over the weekend due to Covid cases within their companies, another sign that the virus isn’t finished with Broadway just yet. Moulin Rouge canceled its Friday night show, as well as two shows on Saturday and one on Sunday, while The Skin of Our Teeth canceled its Saturday evening and Sunday matinee performances. Both productions currently are expected to resume performances tomorrow, Tuesday May 17. The Broadway League recently announced that proof of vaccination would no longer be required of Broadway patrons, and cancelations in recent weeks have been down significantly from the wintertime Omicron surge. But the weekend cancelations suggest that Covid’s impact on Broadway is hardly a thing of the past. The issue was brought into the spotlight yet again last week when Company star Patti LuPone berated an audience member at a post-show talkback … [Read more...] about Broadway’s ‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘The Skin Of Our Teeth’ Cancel Weekend Performances Due To Covid
Pixar Unveils Concept Art & Dates 27th Film ‘Elemental’ For Summer 2023
Pixar has dropped the concept art for its next feature, Elemental , which will hit theaters on June 16 (see it below). Disney already had the Father’s Day weekend date reserved for an untitled Pixar film. Directed by Peter Sohn ( The Good Dinosaur , Partly Cloudy short) and produced by Denise Ream ( The Good Dinosaur , Cars 2 ), Elemental journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire, water, land and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common. The movie was inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me … [Read more...] about Pixar Unveils Concept Art & Dates 27th Film ‘Elemental’ For Summer 2023

Panic! at the Disco fans are putting their investigative skills to good use as they work to crack the code of ShutUpAndGoToBed.com, a cryptic website that popped up over the weekend appearing to tease an upcoming release from the Brendon Urie-fronted band. The site functions as a sleep calculator, gathering information about age demographics and bedtimes to access a personalized wake up time — but all of the countless combinations result in the same suggested time to rise: 6!01. Fans speculate that the unconventionally written time might be pointing toward a new Panic! at the Disco release as early as June 1. Every now and then, the website swaps out the time for L!LV, which could correspond to 5:55 or Viva! Las Vegas, linking back to Urie’s hometown. Don't be a diva, it's time to be free! Panic! Following Your Passion at 65
Opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views of Rolling Stone editors or publishers. A few months ago, I became 65 — I, who still thinks and acts like a person in their 20s, am now a senior citizen. All of a sudden, I became eligible for some of the benefits hitting that landmark birthday: medicare, discounts for things like mass transit, rent, the gym, medical cannabis, movie tickets and many others that I never thought of. As I continue to adapt to my new status, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to what 65-plus will look like and how it will affect me and my work ethic. I also realized that I’m not alone out there; many of my peers and friends are not our parents at 65 when they were old. We still have a lot to contribute and believe it or not, there are some industries, like cannabis, that welcome our experience and understand the value we bring to the table and being the “adult” in the room. With that in mind, I wanted to give some … [Read more...] about Following Your Passion at 65
Kendrick Lamar Has Been Going Through Something
Throughout his career, Kendrick Lamar has never been one to relinquish control. He says as much in his verse on Big Sean’s aptly titled 2013 single . On that track, a fiery declaration of rap supremacy, Kendrick’s ability to wrangle personas and sonic textures from his voice made for one of the genre’s most significant guest verses. His layered, intentional delivery would become its own category of viral YouTube video, as fans dissected each of the Kendrick albums that have declared to be classics. Kendrick’s meticulousness is all over the release of his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, though to a more chaotic effect. Here, he makes an attempt at finally releasing control, or at least his fixation with it. The result is in many ways humbling. Despite literally presenting himself as Jesus on the album’s cover, we find Kendrick in more fallible terrain than at any point in his career. Released as a double album, Mr. Morale & The Big … [Read more...] about Kendrick Lamar Has Been Going Through Something

NBC Goes All Out With Massive Stage Production As Fox Opts For Pre-Taped Presentation On Day 1 Of Upfronts
Like the time-traveler hero in NBC ’s new drama Quantum Leap, we were transported to two different times with the two presentations on the first day of the upfronts . NBC took us back to pre-Covid 2019, pulling out all the stops with an elaborate production at Radio City Music Hall, including an energetic, elaborately choreographed number promoting Bravocon that featured dozens of performers and Bravo stars to rival a top Broadway show. There were a ton of presenters, with Kelly Clarkson performing to open the show and Miley Cyrus singing a medley to close it out. Several hours later, Fox served a throwback to the virtual upfront events of 2020 and 2021 with a pre-taped presentation that included CEO Charlie Collier going on a tour of the Fox lot. Moving from Fox’s longtime upfront home, the 2,300-seat Beacon Theater, to Skylight on Vesey — the former site of the New York Mercantile Exchange, which holds 800 — Fox had Covid on its mind with the smaller venue, where screens … [Read more...] about NBC Goes All Out With Massive Stage Production As Fox Opts For Pre-Taped Presentation On Day 1 Of Upfronts
