Disney CEO Bob Chapek anticipates Disneyland and other parks in 2022 may be mask free and without onerous social distancing for a Covid free, vaccinated populace. Theme parks have been hardest hit among Disney’s businesses. At a conference call to talk over the media giant’s latest earnings, execs said flagship Disneyland and Disneyland Paris likely will not open during the current quarter that ends in March, although Hong Kong Disneyland might. Neither Chapek or CFO Christine McCarthy hazarded a guess on a Disneyland opening date. Asked, instead, when he thinks parks return to normal, Chapek said he’s looking at 2022. “We have no doubt that when we reopen up in parks that were closed, or increase capacity, that that we will have some level of social distancing and mask wearing for the remainder of this year. Joe Rohde , who retired from the Walt Disney Co. in January after four decades as an Imagineer, has joined Virgin Galactic as the venture’s first “experience architect.” Founded by Sir Richard Branson , Virgin Galactic is one of a handful of companies aiming to commercialize space travel. Its sister company, Virgin Orbit, has gained attention for pledging to send the first commercial small satellite mission to Mars, a planet back in the news of late because of NASA’s successful Rover landing. Plans are under way for the first “future astronauts” to start arriving at Spaceport America in New Mexico, Virgin Galactic noted in announcing Rohde’s appointment. The company earlier this month had to cancel a test flight due to what it called “technical checks,” saying it would be rescheduled soon. As part of Disneyland’s California Adventure Park’s 20th anniversary today, officials announced plans to expand dining outdoors at the theme park in Anaheim. In a letter to employees, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock said that by mid-March the company will debut a new ticketed dining event featuring fare from around the theme park as well as new merchandise and other forms of entertainment at California Adventure Park. Disney’s corporate sibling, ABC, confirmed the news with a post on Good Morning America.com. Potrock’s letter called the offering a “distinctly Disney…limited-time ticketed experience.” He also indicated that it would be available multiple times a week. The new event is under development and will adhere to Covid-19 regulations. Disney stock jumped on the news. Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, the bulk of which has been closed since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in March, will serve as the first super Point-of-Dispensing (POD) site for Covid-19 vaccines in Orange County. The site is expected to become operational later this week, county officials announced Monday. Also on Monday, Los Angeles County announced that its mass Covid-19 testing operation at Dodger Stadium will be phased out this week so the sports arena can be turned into a large-scale vaccination location. “The Disneyland Resort, the largest employer in the heart of Orange County, has stepped up to host the county’s first Super POD site – undertaking a monumental task in our vaccination distribution process,” acting Chairman Andrew Do, First District, said in the Orange County announcement.
