‘Accused’: Howard Gordon Crime Anthology Premiere Smashes Ratings Records On Fox
Howard Gordon ’s return to Fox has proved to be fruitful for the network. The premiere episode of his latest crime drama Accused has managed the highest-rated and most-watched debut across broadcast and cable in the last three years. The crime anthology series premiered Sunday night to a 2.0 rating among the advertiser-friendly 18-49 demographic as well as 8.4M viewers, according to early live+same-day Nielsen data. It’s worth noting that the episode had a lead in from the Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers matchup. That’s always bound to boost ratings, but these debut numbers are pretty impressive even with an NFL lead-in. For reference, Fox’s other new drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit also had an NFL lead-in for its premiere episode earlier this month and managed 3.8M live + same-day viewers and a 0.8 demo rating. The series’ three-episode average is currently a 0.4 rating and 2.4M total viewers. The twisty legal thriller from Howard Gordon kept some 8.4M viewers for the duration, setting a ratings record for Fox. But a number of them were left fuming after local Fox stations across the country accidentally cut away in the final minutes, denying them the resolution of the story starring Michael Chiklis. According to sources, 13 markets were affected, representing about 8% of the country, including Cleveland, Sacramento, St. Louis, Indianapolis, San Diego, Greensboro, Little Rock, Lexington, Honolulu, Springfield, Ft. Smith, Monroe and Jackson. The Fox affiliates in those markets are owned by Nexstar, and the glitch appears to be a technical issue in that company’s feed. “We had a technical issue [last night] affecting a small number of our Fox stations. ‘The Resident’: How The Fox Drama Ended Its Sixth (And Possibly Last) Season
In one of the stranger coincidences of the 2022-23 TV season, two medical dramas said their goodbyes on Tuesday — New Amsterdam on NBC and The Resident on Fox. It was a series finale for the former; as much as creator/showrunner David Schulner and Executive Producer Peter Horton didn’t think their five-year-old series should be canceled, they had enough time to plan a hopeful ending for the Ryan Eggold starrer. After six seasons on Fox, The Resident hasn’t been canceled … yet. But Tuesday’s finale dubbed “All Hands On Deck” had all the makings of a final farewell. Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) got his happy ending by declaring his love for Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas). Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) came clean about his drug addiction and got to keep his job at Chastain Memorial after saving young Sammie, the granddaughter of Dr. Bell (Bruce Greenwood).
