Tom and Jerry return to theaters and HBO Max in a hipster, live-action film that's strictly for younger children. The classic Hanna-Barbera cat and mouse cartoon are still the best of frenemies. But get a modern update that rankled my old-school sensibilities. I knew things were going to be different when an animated pigeon starts rapping in the opening scene. The film isn't a musical, but there are a few auto-tuned songs that turned me off completely. That said, Tom & Jerry are still up to the usual bag of tricks. Tom chases Jerry, gets pummelled in numerous creative ways, and Jerry escapes laughing. Kids will be entertained by the hijinks. Adults and fans of the shorts will find the updated storyline lacking. Using Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) as leverage, Agatha takes a strand of Wanda's hair to create doorways into her psyche. They explore the events that defined Wanda. Which leads Agatha to a stunning conclusion about Wanda's magic. Tom & Jerry has earned the second-best box office opening of the pandemic with a projected $12.5 million. The long-awaited family movie opened in theaters and on HBO Max this weekend with $4 million on Friday alone. The movie beats the 3-day earnings of Universal/Dreamworks Animation's The Croods: A New Age , which took in $9.7 million over the Thanksgiving weekend late last year, and shows evidence that people are slowly starting to get back into theaters after being stuck in their homes for nearly a year. As of this writing, Tom and Jerry is the second-best debut for a movie released during the public health crisis. Wonder Woman 1984 , which also opened in theaters and HBO Max, is still the winner after earning $16.4 million upon its debut weekend. Recently, several reports stated that Parineeti Chopra-starrer Saina is headed for a direct-to-digital release on Amazon Prime. The film helmed by Amol Gupta, is a biopic on ace badminton player Saina Nehwal. Now, the latest development we hear is that the makers have reversed their plans and will now be releasing their film in cinema halls instead.
