When original Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch was let go from the group in 1995 — or “excommunicated,” to use his own term —he started a new chapter of his life in Florida as a producer-songwriter and rarely looked back. His only encounter with Petty in the years that followed took place in 2002 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and the only communication he can recall from guitarist Mike Campbell in the two decades since that night was a brief phone call in 2017 shortly after Petty died. So it was no small surprise in late 2021 when Lynch picked up his phone one day and heard Campbell’s voice on the other end. “I have a proposition for you,” said Campbell, who was on the verge of kicking off his first-ever solo tour, but was going to be without regular drummer Matt Laug for a period in the spring and summer when he had commitments in Europe with Italian superstar Vasco Rossi. “I’d need you to play a leg of the tour. Are you up for it?” … [Read more...] about Mike Campbell and Stan Lynch on Their Surprise Heartbreakers Reunion

Watch My Chemical Romance Perform ‘The Foundations Of Decay’ for First Time Live
My Chemical Romance kicked off their tour last night at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, where the rock band offered the live debut of their new single, “The Foundations of Decay.” The group also performed “Surrender The Night” and “Boy Division,” from their 2013 B-side compilation Conventional Weapons , for the first time live. Elsewhere in the set, My Chemical Romance showcased fan favorites like “This Is How I Disappear,” “The Kids Of Yesterday,” “Helena,” and “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).” “The Foundations of Decay,” a sprawling, six-minute epic that blends to-the-rafters emo rock with clever twists and turns into hardcore and prog, marks My Chemical Romance’s first new music in eight years. Fans at last night’s show are suggesting there is more to come from the band based on the new merch being sold on the tour, which is themed around the word “Swarm.” Sure seems like there's a My Chemical Romance album on the way, and it's probably called Swarm. Help Sunny Day Real Estate’s Dan Hoerner Save Washington Club
Seattle rock outfit Sunny Day Real Estate might be in a state of flux, but guitarist Dan Hoerner is still passionate about the Washington music scene. In an effort to save legendary Spokane venue The Big Dipper, Hoerner has started an IndieGoGo campaign with a target of $50,000. Random Notes 2014: Hottest Rock Pics After learning that The Big Dipper had fallen into shambles, Hoerner bought the downtown venue with his wife, Dawson Smith-Hoerner. They’ve spent the past seven months renovating the space, but they’re still in need of a full fire sprinkler system – which is where the crowdfunding comes into play. “Spokane needs to have The Big Dipper as part of the cityscape,” Hoerner said in a statement. “It’s like the goat at the park or the horses on the Carousel or Merlyn’s or the Flour Mill. . . You have to have that stuff around for Spokane to be Spokane. We think The Big Dipper needs to be a part of the fabric of our city and we want to bring it back to life.” … [Read more...] about Help Sunny Day Real Estate’s Dan Hoerner Save Washington Club
‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Trailer Introduces the Sparrow Academy
Netflix has shared the new trailer for the third season of The Umbrella Academy , the superhero show based on the comic book series by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way . The new season, premiering June 22 on the streaming service, finds the Umbrella Academy facing off against the mysterious Sparrow Academy via a paradox that loops together multiple timelines. The Kids in the Hall Are Back — Older, Slightly Less Angry and Still Incredibly F–king Funny
It starts with one of them casually saying, “Write what you know” — it may be Mark McKinney, slightly leaning back in his chair and staring at the ceiling, or it might be Bruce McCulloch, who’s wandering around the conference room, checking his phone as it charges and idly munching on a pastry. Whoever said it first, it’s definitely Kevin McDonald who quickly jumps in and, as if on cue, immediately chants, “Write what you know!” He says it again, at which point Dave Foley joins in as well. “Write what you know!” “Write what you know!” McKinney and McCulloch, both grinning, start singing along as well: “Write what you know! Write what you know! Write what you know!” Scott Thompson is too busy laughing to harmonize at first, until he finally composes himself, clears his throat, and then beautifully bellows out, in the most operatic tenor imaginable: “Wriiiiite! Whaaat! Yoooouuuu! Knoooooowwwwwwww !!!” Minutes before, the legendary sketch-comedy quintet the Kids in the Hall had … [Read more...] about The Kids in the Hall Are Back — Older, Slightly Less Angry and Still Incredibly F–king Funny
‘I Miss Him So Much’: Mavis Staples on Her Last Waltz With Levon Helm
When Mavis Staples thinks about her late friend Levon Helm , memories of her family flood into her mind. Decades ago, when Helm and Mavis’ sister Yvonne were regularly talking on the phone about a possible joint tour of Black colleges, Mavis would feel left out. “I’d butt in and say, ‘Give me that phone — I want to speak to him!’” the 82-year-old singer recalls. When Helm would see the Staple Singers on the road, he’d greet Mavis’ father Pops Staples with the familiarity of a childhood friend. “Levon is the only person that would ever call my father Pops by his real name. He’d always say, ‘Hey, Roebuck! Come show me this!’” says Staples, launching into a spot-on impersonation of Helm’s Arkansas drawl. “It sounded so good to hear him call my daddy’s name, and my father was so tickled.” But these days, Staples’ strongest memory of her dear friend Levon Helm is from the last time the two ever performed together. Back in June of 2011, Mavis Staples and her band arrived at … [Read more...] about ‘I Miss Him So Much’: Mavis Staples on Her Last Waltz With Levon Helm
Harry Styles Brings the Pop to UBS Arena for ‘One Night Only’ Show
To begin anew, Harry Styles returned to where he last left things off. The consummate rock star finished the North American leg of his Love On Tour trek at Long Island’s new UBS Arena in November; he was also the first artist to grace the venue’s stage. On the same day he launched his third album Harry’s House , he returned to play the whole new batch of songs in full, and then some. After an afternoon of pouring rain, the thousands of lucky fans who miraculously got the highly sought-after Ticketmaster pre-sale codes to the event entered the sold-out show covered in soaked boa feathers. The weather (and long commute from New York City proper) didn’t dampen the thrilled energy in the crowd. The general admission floor was like a class reunion, with girls in sequins and velvet running around to say hi to each other. The last time they may have met up was likely the last UBS event. Once the well-memorized pre-show playlist ran its course (including an audience-wide … [Read more...] about Harry Styles Brings the Pop to UBS Arena for ‘One Night Only’ Show
