Tyler Hubbard has extolled the joys of country living in myriad ways as the lead singer of Florida Georgia Line , scoring hits with country-pop juggernauts like “Cruise,” “This Is How We Roll,” and “’Round Here.” For his solo debut “5 Foot 9,” Hubbard gets in touch with his softer side and thanks his maker for the most precious things in his life. Written by Hubbard with Cadillac Three leader Jaren Johnston and Chase McGill, “5 Foot 9” is driven by fingerstyle acoustic guitar that pushes the rhythm along. Even when the full band kicks in, it’s subdued — there’s a banjo, some brushed drums, and soft pedal steel to accompany Hubbard’s ode to someone who “loves Tim McGraw and a small-town accent.” Sure, he celebrates the little pleasures, but he sees his love as something miraculous: “Jack makes good whiskey/But God makes the good stuff,” he sings. Hubbard signed with EMI Nashville to put out his solo album, which does not yet have a release date. Collaborators on the project … [Read more...] about Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard Makes Solo Debut With ‘5 Foot 9’

FYI -- the store ain't cheap. Cannes Review: Director James Gray’s ‘Armageddon Time’
Writer-director James Gray has been to the Cannes Film Festival in competition on four previous occasions with We Own the Night, The Yards, The Immigrant and Two Lovers but has yet to walk away with a prize. Maybe the fifth time will be the charm? It certainly would be deserving as Gray comes back to his beloved New York City roots with the highly autobiographical and intriguingly titled Armageddon Time . Lest you think that with that title this is more akin to his previous film, the Brad Pitt-starring sci-fi Ad Astra, think again. It couldn’t be farther apart and reps a return to his more frequent thoughtful character-driven family drama explorations rather than space, though that figures in at least one way. With Ad Astra and the exceptional and haunting jungle epic The Lost City of Z ( my favorite of all his films and one of the best of any kind this century), Gray had drifted from the films that brought him to Cannes. But he is back in familiar territory, … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Director James Gray’s ‘Armageddon Time’
Steven Spielberg: Force Behind the Box Office, From ‘Jaws’ to ‘E.T.’
A t 34, Steven Spielberg is, in any conventional sense, the most successful movie director in Hollywood, America, the Occident, the planet Earth, the solar system and the galaxy. Three of his movies – Jaws , Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Raiders of the Lost Ark – are action-fantasy classics that rank among the biggest moneymakers of all time. Before the summer is out, they may well be joined by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial , a lyrical piece of sci-fi about the human, and alien, condition (conceived, coproduced and directed by Spielberg), and a crowd-pleasing shocker, Poltergeist (coproduced and cowritten by Spielberg but directed by Tobe Hooper). Spielberg is the scion of a suburban upbringing and a public-school education. His mother was a concert pianist and his father a computer scientist who moved his family of four children “from Ohio to New Jersey, Arizona, Saratoga and Los Angeles.” From age twelve on, Spielberg knew he did one thing best: make movies. When … [Read more...] about Steven Spielberg: Force Behind the Box Office, From ‘Jaws’ to ‘E.T.’
Sid Vicious Accused of Murder
Former Sex Pistol Sid Vicious was arrested on October 12th at the Chelsea Hotel and charged with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend of almost two years, Nancy Spungen. Spungen, like Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie) a heroin addict, is thought to have died between the hours of five and nine on the morning Sid was arrested. Her body was found in the bathroom of the couple’s first-floor hotel room in a pool of blood. Dr. Geetha Natarajan, associate medical examiner for Manhattan, said the cause of death was internal hemorrhaging due to a single knife wound to the lower abdomen. Vicious’ personal friends in the punk community immediately suspected that Spungen’s death was part of a botched double suicide. “They were both really depressed and talked about dying the last few weeks,” said a woman who had become friendly with them at the Chelsea. Another friend said the couple had a long-standing agreement that if one died, the other would follow. Then, a week after his release … [Read more...] about Sid Vicious Accused of Murder
