We’ve All Had One — A Tom Cruise Moment
Every journalist who covered Hollywood in the Golden Era that stretched roughly from Risky Business (1983) through Top Gun: Maverick ( now ) has had a Tom Cruise moment. I had mine in 2002. My father had just died. It was a rough death, not quick, and as I was driving back for the last time from attending him in Sacramento, I made myself a promise: I would be at peace with everyone for a while. No fighting. No arguments. What anyone asked, insofar as I could, I would just do. ’Top Gun: Maverick’ From Cannes To Theaters – Deadline’s Complete Coverage As luck would have it, the first test occurred somewhere around Bakersfield. On the road, I got a call from Maer Roshan , now editor of Los Angeles Magazine , then editorial director of Tina Brown ’s Talk . We have a problem , explained Maer. Talk had scheduled some sort of theme issue–something about business and/or professional life in America. But Tina had managed to promise the cover to Tom … [Read more...] about We’ve All Had One — A Tom Cruise Moment

Peter Bart: What Would Viacom Look Like If Tom Freston Hadn’t Been Fired For Losing MySpace To Murdoch?
Amid the orgy of congratulation and self-congratulation last week, it was difficult to find anyone pumping the hand of Philippe Dauman . It was exactly 10 years ago that the Viacom CEO took office, yet today he takes the rap for putting his company on the corporate casualty list. In assuming his duties a decade ago, Dauman delivered a stern lecture to his subordinates. “Never let a competitor beat you to the trophy,” he intoned. The “trophy” at that moment was not an Oscar. It was a site called MySpace , which Rupert Murdoch had just bought for a numbing $580 million (he later dumped it for $35 million). Dauman’s boss, Sumner Redstone , had coveted MySpace and was so angry about losing it to Murdoch that he fired his then-CEO, Tom Freston . One of Dauman’s first moves was to dispose of Viacom’s stake in a new company called Vice for $3 million (it now values itself at around $4 billion.) And so began the vicissitudes of Viacom — one of the fascinating corporate … [Read more...] about Peter Bart: What Would Viacom Look Like If Tom Freston Hadn’t Been Fired For Losing MySpace To Murdoch?

The End Of Packaging Fees: The WGA’s Historic Campaign To Reshape Talent Agency Business Takes Full Effect Today – Q&A
The WGA ’s historic reshaping of the talent agency business will take full effect at the end of business today, after which agency packaging fees will no longer be permitted under the guild’s franchise agreement. “The agency campaign was founded on the simple truth that agents are our fiduciaries,” said WGA West president Meredith Stiehm, who was one of the named plaintiffs in the guild’s long-running anti-trust lawsuit against the “Big 3” talent agencies. “The interests and priorities of agencies and their writer clients must be aligned. Our campaign had three main goals: end the collection of packaging fees, put a halt to the conflict of interest of agency-owned studios, and for the agencies to share information, which the WGA uses to fight late pay and free work. Thanks to the resolve and unity of the membership, we’ve achieved those goals. Today, as we mark the beginning of the end of packaging fees, we move forward with our agency partners to improve writers’ compensation … [Read more...] about The End Of Packaging Fees: The WGA’s Historic Campaign To Reshape Talent Agency Business Takes Full Effect Today – Q&A
