When it comes to diversity in film, streaming far outpaced theatrical releases last year, according to a new report from UCLA , which found that diversity has taken “a step back in theatrical films but strides forward in streaming.” The report found that women and people of color fared far better in the streamers than in theatrical releases in every job category surveyed, which included directors, writers, lead actors and overall casts. And despite recent progress, the report’s authors say that in 2022, diversity in many key jobs on theatrical releases saw a “backslide to 2019 levels.” Even so, the percentage of women directors of theatrical films has nearly tripled since 2011 – from 4.6% to 14.6% last year – though they remain underrepresented by a factor of more than 3-to-1. Deadline has confirmed that Netflix film executives Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke are exiting the streamer amid a reorganization of the film group. All live-action film content now will be overseen by Kira Goldberg, Ori Marmur and Niija Kuykendall. We hear that Netflix will continue to make indie pics, and that this whole plan was part of streamlining and solidifying ops. Mubi is adding over 50 features from the Sony Pictures ’ library to its U.S. streaming service. The mix of studio and arthouse fare includes Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind , Martin Scorsese ’s The Age of Innocence , The Last Picture Show by Peter Bogdanovich and films from Wes Anderson , Pedro Almodovar and Guillermo Del Toro. The company’s growing and global streaming service currently offers over 900 titles in the U.S., where it adds one new film to the platform daily. The Sony deal is a significant haul, especially since studios have become more aggressive in retaining content for their own services. Sony, uniquely, doesn’t have a streaming platform in-house. The Mandalorian shot back onto Nielsen ’s U.S. streaming charts during the week of the Season 3 premiere. The Disney+ series tallied 823M viewing minutes from February 27 to March 5, coming in at No. 5 among streaming programs. According to Nielsen, the first episode from Season 3 generated 57% of that total, despite only being 42 minutes long. The Star Wars spinoff series is no stranger to the Nielsen streaming Top 10, having previously made history as both the first Disney+ show to make the list and the first non-Netflix show to hit No. 1 . The debut week for Season 2 saw over a billion viewing minutes across nine episodes, so while Season 3’s number is still impressive, it is a dip from the previous installment. The French movie sector saw investment and activity return to pre-pandemic levels in 2022, while streamer contributions rose, according to the annual production report of France ’s National Cinema Centre . Overall, there was $1.28 billion (1.18 billion euros) worth of investment in feature film production in 2022, against €1.44 billion (1.33 billion euros) in 2021 and $1.21 billion (1.11 billion euros) in 2019. The number of films also stabilized at 287, down from the 2021 spike of 340 but in line with the 10-year average of 288.
