TomKat MeDiA Developing Novels ‘Fateful Harvest’ And ‘The Death And Life Of Aida Hernandez’ For Film
EXCLUSIVE : Kat Taylor & Tom Steyer’s TomKat MeDiA has unveiled its slate of social justice-themed projects for 2022. The multi-platform media company has secured rights to Duff Wilson’s eco-thriller Fateful Harvest and Aaron Bobrow-Strain’s award-winning work of narrative non-fiction, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez , with plans to develop both as feature films. Based on a Seattle Times investigative series reported by Wilson that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fateful Harvest is the riveting account of an alarming environmental scandal. Published in 2001, the book tells the story of Patty Martin — the mayor of a small Washington town called Quincy — who discovers American industries are dumping toxic waste into farmers’ fields and home gardens by labeling it “fertilizer.” She becomes outraged at the contaminated soil, failed crops, dead horses, and fatal, rare diseases in her town, as well as the direct threat to her own children’s health. Yet, when … [Read more...] about TomKat MeDiA Developing Novels ‘Fateful Harvest’ And ‘The Death And Life Of Aida Hernandez’ For Film
Michael Mann On The Long Odysseys of ‘Heat’ And ‘Ferrari’ – Toronto Q&A
EXCLUSIVE : “So you write a story about a movie I’m not doing, and you make the first time Al Pacino and Robert De Niro share the screen together an afterthought?” That’s my recollection of the first words that Michael Mann ever said to me, after I wrote a Weekly Variety column about how he and Leonardo DiCaprio were scrapping their James Dean movie, and oh yeah, Mann would instead direct this crime drama called Heat . Boy, was Mann right. Last night in Toronto, he and cast members Pacino, De Niro, Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd celebrated the 20th anniversary of his seminal Los Angeles crime thriller, one that took about 20 years to go from script to screen. To honor the occasion, he took a trip down memory lane with Deadline, and filled us in on his next film, the one in which Christian Bale will play Italian automobile magnate Enzo Ferrari. That project is similar to Heat, each an epic-sized drama that took forever to solve the creative challenges. Re-watching Heat to … [Read more...] about Michael Mann On The Long Odysseys of ‘Heat’ And ‘Ferrari’ – Toronto Q&A
Margaret Qualley And Geraldine Viswanathan To Star In Ethan Coen’s First Solo Directing Outing
EXCLUSIVE: Ethan Coen looks to have found the leads for his untitled pic at Working Title and Focus Features. Sources tell Deadline that Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan are set to star in the film, which will marks Coen’s first time directing a film on his own after having spent his movie career co-directing and writing with his brother Joel. As of now, plot and character details are being kept under wraps for the new pic, which Ethan Coen co-wrote with his wife Tricia Cooke. They are also producing with Robert Graf and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Coen had been meeting with talent for months, with the roles quickly becoming some of the more coveted parts in the biz for up-and-coming actresses. In recent weeks, a shortlist was made and chemistry readings were held; in the end, insiders say Qualley and Viswanathan’s screen tests could not be beat. The film will shoot this fall. Qualley has had herself quite the year going back to her … [Read more...] about Margaret Qualley And Geraldine Viswanathan To Star In Ethan Coen’s First Solo Directing Outing
Mads Mikkelsen On Replacing Johnny Depp In ‘Fantastic Beasts’ And Why Depp “Might” Come Back – Sarajevo
Although Mads Mikkelsen arrived at the Sarajevo Film Festival to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for his outstanding contribution to the art of film, many of the crowd who attended the event’s morning “Coffee With…” event on Monday seemed, rather worryingly, to be fans of the Danish star’s TV work — notably NBC’s cannibal drama Hannibal . Nevertheless, the actor took their questions in his stride as part of a wide-ranging conversation that embraced his early career in Danish indie cinema, his move to the U.S. and the MCU, his affection for Pink Floyd, and his love of football. “I always wanted to make money out of sports,” he quipped. “It never happened.” Speaking of his most recent release, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore , in which he played Gellert Grindelwald, Mikkelsen admitted he’d had concerns about replacing Johnny Depp , who withdrew from the franchise due to his much-publicized court case with ex-wife Amber Heard. He also hinted … [Read more...] about Mads Mikkelsen On Replacing Johnny Depp In ‘Fantastic Beasts’ And Why Depp “Might” Come Back – Sarajevo
Will Superhero Hiatus Power Arthouses? ‘Emily The Criminal’, ‘Summering’ & ‘Fall’ Test Market – Specialty Preview
A handful of smaller films will start to test audience enthusiasm for movie theaters without big tentpoles. It’s been a rocky summer for specialty releases, and an uphill climb as arthouses emerge from Covid jitters with franchise films sucking up oxygen and screens. But superheroes are on hiatus. “There isn’t giant competition from tentpoles,” said Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions. “On balance, it’s good. Obviously, if you have Top Gun , it sucks the air out of the marketplace. It’s still better — for the specialty market — to have three or four indies than one giant release. Exhibitors are antsy about the sudden dearth of new wide releases this month and next, but they’ve also been asking for more box office breadth. (“We cannot just live off dinner. We need breakfast and lunch too,” Marcus CEO Greg Marcus told Deadline recently .) “We have seen signs of life in our sector,” Cohen said.
