Paramount’s chairman and CEO Brad Grey has made official what’s been known for a while: He’s leaving the studio after 12 years . He’s just sent a memo to his staff, the day after hosting an intimate party at his home for Paramount Pictures execs who are staying put and other longtime industry allies. Grey wrote that he is handing over most of his duties effective today but is staying “engaged” over the next weeks to “support a smooth transition.” (Read his full memo below.) The memo’s release came at the same time Viacom officially announced Grey’s exit atop the Melrose Ave studio. As Deadline reported , he gives way to a transition committee that includes Marc Evans (President, Motion Picture Group), Andrew Gumpert (Chief Operating Officer), Amy Powell (President, Paramount Television and Digital Entertainment), Megan Colligan (President, Worldwide Distribution and Marketing) and Mark Badagliacca (Chief Financial Officer). “Brad has overseen the production … [Read more...] about Paramount’s Brad Grey Sends His Exit Memo As Viacom Makes It Official

As Rumors Swirl, Is Brad Grey Long For Paramount?
EXCLUSIVE : Rumors are racing around Hollywood that Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey is on his way out after a 12-year run. The most widely rumored version is that Grey has packed up his office and canceled a bunch of meetings. The packing up the office rumor isn’t the case — he is not there, but the lot closed early today because of the Presidents Day holiday weekend. But it certainly seems that something is happening and that Grey’s run as chief is ending. It has been almost impossible to get a straight answer, but I’m told that conversations are going on right now between Grey and Viacom to figure out the future. Does Grey continue? That looks unlikely. Does he move to some emeritus post or one where he puts together projects of his own? That seems more on the mark. Neither Viacom, Paramount or Grey would comment. I’ve heard that Viacom chief Bob Bakish will come to Los Angeles and meet with Grey, probably on Tuesday, so this cloud will hover over … [Read more...] about As Rumors Swirl, Is Brad Grey Long For Paramount?

What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors
Top Gun : Maverick ’s Cannes Film Festival premiere marks another high point in the movie star career of Tom Cruise . The actor turns 60 on July 3, and unlike most leading men of that age who become quicker to call for the stunt double, Cruise shows little evidence of slowing down after 43 films. If anything, his Mission: Impossible stunts seem to grow more ambitiously dangerous, not to mention the fact that he and director Doug Liman will become the first to actually shoot a space film in space for real—aboard one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX crafts with the cooperation of NASA. So how does Cruise continue to carve such a path? “I’ve gotten to work with a number of actors who’ve had great success and long careers, Tom being at the top of the heap,” says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. “He approaches every day with the enthusiasm that it’s his first movie, and at the same time puts the effort into it like it’s his last movie. That’s a good attitude … [Read more...] about What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors
Brad Grey Dies At Age 59 From Cancer
In a shocking development, it saddens me to report that Brad Grey has died at age 59. His death, from cancer, comes months after his exit as chairman/CEO of Paramount Pictures , a job he held for 12 years. He died last night in Holmby Hills, CA, with friends and family at his side. Grey is survived by his wife, Cassandra Grey, their son Jules, his three grown children Sam, Max and Emily from his marriage to Jill (nee Gutterson) Grey, his mother Barbara Schumsky, his brother Michael Grey and his sister Robin Grey. The family said that there will be a small private funeral service later this week. A memorial service will be scheduled in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC. Grey was integral in raising money for alternative life-saving cancer research at USC’s Westside Cancer Center: In one night, they collected $4.5M at the Rebels with a Cause event when Oracle founder … [Read more...] about Brad Grey Dies At Age 59 From Cancer

Academy Issues New Regulations & Rules For 95th Oscars, Films Must Qualify Again Only In Theatres
In a sign that things are getting back to some degree of normalcy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is returning to pre-pandemic rules of eligibility and no longer will allow its digital Screening Room as a way to qualify. Instead, it said that because theaters have reopened, the six qualifying U.S. metropolitan areas continue to be Los Angeles County, the City of New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta, and rules apply to General Entry categories as well as the Documentary and Short Film categories. Feature films must have a seven-day theatrical run before exhibition in any other medium with specific requirements. Drive-ins remain eligible. The Academy also confirmed that eligibility for the 95th annual Academy Awards officially has returned to the calendar year, thus any feature film must have a qualifying release date between January 1 and December 31, 2022. The 94th Oscars had only a 10-month eligibility between March and December 2021. … [Read more...] about Academy Issues New Regulations & Rules For 95th Oscars, Films Must Qualify Again Only In Theatres

Inside George Miller’s 20-Year Quest To Make ‘Three Thousand Years Of Longing’, As ‘Furiosa’ Revs Her Engines – Cannes
EXCLUSIVE : George Miller is distracted. Five minutes into our meeting, he begs forgiveness to take a quick call. And then, on an iPad tilted in his direction, the filmmaker watches as a camera feed from the Australian outback offers him a live view of a pre-shoot for his next feature, Furiosa . His supervising stunt coordinator and second unit director, Guy Norris, whose work with Miller stretches back to 1981’s Mad Max sequel The Road Warrior , is already shooting sequences for the new film. Set 15 years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road , the film will tell the backstory of Charlize Theron’s enigmatic Furiosa, this time played by Anya Taylor-Joy. “Here I am doing an interview with you halfway across the world, and I’m able to look at this footage being shot far west from where I am and we’re discussing it as we go through the process,” says Miller, marveling at the technology. “It’s amazing, really.” It has been seven years since Fury Road … [Read more...] about Inside George Miller’s 20-Year Quest To Make ‘Three Thousand Years Of Longing’, As ‘Furiosa’ Revs Her Engines – Cannes
