Facebook sparked panic among Tinder users on Wednesday after its privacy tweaks meant people were unable to log into their account on the dating app. The social media giant removed the ability to search for people via mobile number or email after admitting that "most" of its two billion users could have had their information collected - including 1.1 million people in Britain. Previously, users could choose in their settings to allow others to find them via their contact details. But in a blog post on Wednesday, Facebook said "malicious actors" had "abused these features to scrape public information" from the platform. The company also announced a raft of other changes to restrict data access... Register or log in to view this and other Technology Intelligence articles. It's free and easy to do. ‘I’m really sorry’: Mark Zuckerberg has been apologising for privacy lapses since before Facebook even began
They say “sorry” is one of the hardest words to say, but Mark Zuckerberg seems to have no problems uttering it. Ever since 2003 when his hot-or-not website at Harvard landed him in hot water, the co-founder of Facebook has been quick to offer up a mea culpa when trying to placate irate users. His latest expression of remorse came in response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. During an interview with CNN, he took responsibility for the social network's policies that enabled an app to gain access to the personal information of 50 million users without their consent. "This was a major breach of trust, and I'm really sorry that this happened," Mr Zuckerberg said on Wednesday night. What history... Emmanuel Macron compares ‘too big to be governed’ Google and Facebook to oil barons
Emmanuel Macron has suggested that Facebook and Google are “too big to be governed” and compared their dominance to that of the oil barons in the early 20th century, saying they may have to be dismantled. The French president’s comments are among the most forceful from a Western leader on the subject of the two companies’ growing influence, which is coming under increased scrutiny from regulators. “At a point of time, your government, your people, may say: ‘Wake up. They are too big.’,” Mr Macron told Wired magazine. “Not just too big to fail, but too big to be governed. Which is brand new.” He added that governments may choose to break up the companies, saying: “At this point, you may choose... Baseball Twitter is Freaking Over Today’s Mets-Phillies Facebook-Only Webcast: Just Like ‘The Russians Drew It Up’
Earlier Wednesday, the long-awaited Congressional appearance of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was finally announced — with the mogul slated to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on April 11. In addition to the Cambridge Analytica controversy, outraged baseball fans will undoubtedly be hoping Zuckerberg is grilled about his company’s role in getting Wednesday’s New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies game booted from TV. The game is the first of 25 MLB contests this season which will be broadcast exclusively on Facebook Watch. The Facebook stream is the only way to watch the game live — even in the local markets. The regular television broadcasts in New York and Philadelphia have been pre-empted. Baseball fans hit the roof. Here’s a sampling of the reaction from social media. I really hate that the #Mets game is on Facebook only tomorrow. Hate it. @CMBWFAN — Chris Carlin (@ChrisCarlin) April 3, 2018 Today's Mets-Phillies game … [Read more...] about Baseball Twitter is Freaking Over Today’s Mets-Phillies Facebook-Only Webcast: Just Like ‘The Russians Drew It Up’
Facebook: Cambridge Analytica Got Data from ‘Up to 87 Million People –– Mostly in the US’
The controversial company Cambridge Analytica may have obtained personal data from nearly 87 million users — far more than the originally reported 50 million accounts harvested by the data firm during the 2016 presidential election, Facebook said Thursday. In a statement announcing “plans to restrict data on Facebook,” the world’s most popular social media platform acknowledged Cambridge Analytica’s ability to harvest user information in its attempt to influence the U.S. presidential election. But the buried lede was found near the very bottom of the announcement, where Facebook wrote, “In total, we believe the Facebook information of up to 87 million people — mostly in the US — may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.” Cambridge Analytica’s actions in the 2016 election came to light in recent weeks after data scientist and whistleblower Christopher Wylie exposed information about the firm’s internal … [Read more...] about Facebook: Cambridge Analytica Got Data from ‘Up to 87 Million People –– Mostly in the US’
