I May Destroy You and Chewing Gum creator Michaela Coel has partnered with the BFI and German carmaker BMW to launch a new filmmaking challenge. The BMW Filmmaking Challenge will provide five shortlisted filmmakers with access to a $12,000 (£10,000) production fund alongside a series of mentoring sessions with Coel and an executive producer from the BFI to create a 90-second short film. From the five shorts, a winning film will be selected to premiere as part of the closing night gala of the BFI London Film Festival in October 2023. All five films will be available on BFI Player. The BFI will open applications in March 2023. The chosen filmmakers will be given the budget to produce their films over the summer months. AMC Entertainment Sells Stake In Saudi Arabia Theater Venture To Local Partner For $30 Million
AMC Entertainment said Saudi Entertainment Ventures (SEVEN) will buy out its investment in movie theater venture, Saudi Cinema Company, for $30 million. AMC said the agreement calls for it to transition from a management and investment role in SCC to “a pure licensing relationship.” Current AMC Cinemas and future locations operated by SCC will retain the AMC Cinemas name and other IP through the licensing agreement. The deal dates back to 2017 when AMC entered a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia to explore bringing theatrical exhibition to the Kingdom for the first time since the 1980s. AMC hosted the country’s first movie screening in 2018 at King Abdullah Financial District, Riyadh. ‘The Last Of Us’ Audience Grows For Third Consecutive Week, Becoming HBO’s Fourth Current Series Averaging 15M+ Viewers Per Episode
The Last of Us doesn’t look like it’ll be losing steam any time soon. On Sunday, 6.4M people tuned in to watch the third episode of the post-apocalyptic series across HBO and HBO Max, according to Nielsen and first party data. That’s a 12% increase from last week’s viewership, which already had set a record for the largest week 2 audience growth for an HBO Original drama series in the history of the network. Sunday’s audience is also up 37% from the series premiere, which was watched same-day by 4.7M people. It only took two episodes for HBO to renew the series for a second season. It was an expected movie, considering the first episode scored the second-largest premiere after House of the Dragon since Boardwalk Empire’s launch in 2010.
