What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

May 17, 2022 by deadline.com

Top Gun : Maverick ’s Cannes Film Festival premiere marks another high point in the movie star career of Tom Cruise . The actor turns 60 on July 3, and unlike most leading men of that age who become quicker to call for the stunt double, Cruise shows little evidence of slowing down after 43 films. If anything, his Mission: Impossible stunts seem to grow more ambitiously dangerous, not to mention the fact that he and director Doug Liman will become the first to actually shoot a space film in space for real—aboard one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX crafts with the cooperation of NASA. So how does Cruise continue to carve such a path? “I’ve gotten to work with a number of actors who’ve had great success and long careers, Tom being at the top of the heap,” says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. “He approaches every day with the enthusiasm that it’s his first movie, and at the same time puts the effort into it like it’s his last movie. That’s a good attitude … [Read more...] about What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley Lead Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2022 Inductees

May 17, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

The Country Music Hall of Fame has announced a new group of inductees for 2022. Rock & roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis will be inducted in the Veteran category, neotraditionalist Keith Whitley will join the Hall in the Modern category, and former RCA Records executive will become a member in the Nonperforming category. Brooks & Dunn handled the announcements in the Hall of Fame’s rotunda, marking the first time in two years that they’d been able to gather in person for the new Hall of Fame class. It was also an occasion that was still heavy with the recent death of 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Naomi Judd for her work in the Judds. Louisiana native Jerry Lee Lewis initially made his impact in rockabilly and rock & roll, cutting the iconic Fifties singles like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” for Sun Records in Memphis and wowing audiences with his boogie-woogie piano and flamboyant, high-octane performances. In the Sixties, he shifted to country … [Read more...] about Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley Lead Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2022 Inductees

Bataclan Concertgoers Describe Horror of Terrorist Attack

November 14, 2015 by www.rollingstone.com

As the tragic scope and breadth of the Paris terrorist attacks continues to unfurl, attendees of Eagles of Death Metal ’s show at concert venue Bataclan have begun detailing their horrific accounts of the hostage situation that claimed the lives of 89 people. Here are some of their stories: “My friends and I were at a barricade near the stage on [guitarist] Dave Catching’s side. Eagles of Death Metal started to play at 9 p.m. They were fucking great, and I’m not saying that because of what happened. Maybe 40 minutes, 50 minutes after, we heard pop, pop, pop-pop pop, pop . It was not like the sound of guns. We heard maybe 15 shots, before we realized it was very serious. I didn’t see anyone get shot, but my friend who plays guitar in my band [Red Lemons], saw the three guys. He saw the red and orange color of the fire coming out of the Kalashnikovs. I saw Jesse [Hughes’] face, and all the musicians ran toward the back, so I said, ‘Let’s get out.’ We went through the stage … [Read more...] about Bataclan Concertgoers Describe Horror of Terrorist Attack

The Lame Blowback to March For Our Lives

March 28, 2018 by www.rollingstone.com

It’s sure to go down as one of the iconic images in our history: first-generation Cuban-American Emma González, brown-skinned and bald-pated and queer, standing silent and tearful, mournful and proud, bringing the March for Our Lives in D.C. to a hush at first puzzling, then immeasurably profound. For the liberal-minded among us, González – along with her compatriots, and the marchers in at least 450 other places – blew in like an early shot of political spring, opening a sunny crack in the chill gray clouds that have hovered and threatened and darkened everything since November 8th, 2016. Sure, this break in the gloom only lasted about five minutes (or six minutes and 20 seconds ). The spell was dashed as soon as Stormy Daniels began responding to Anderson Cooper’s gentle questions on 60 Minutes . But the bracing honesty and irreverent optimism of the movement spawned by González’s fellow survivors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School gave us the first shot of hope in a … [Read more...] about The Lame Blowback to March For Our Lives

Sean Spicer Is Ready to Talk About It

June 7, 2018 by www.rollingstone.com

Donald Trump had barely taken his hand off the Bible when his press secretary, Sean Spicer , catapulted into the annals of American ignominy with his infamous defense of the president’s sparsely-attended inauguration. Spicer’s daily press briefings became appointment viewing in the administration’s early months – his gaffes were .GIF’ed and his pugnacious style mercilessly skewered on SNL . In July, Regnery will publish The Briefing , Spicer’s memoir chronicling his tenure as Trump’s spokesman and the many years he toiled at the Republican National Committee before that. Spicer spoke to Rolling Stone about his private regrets, personal beefs and that first day behind the podium. Is there anything you really regret saying from the podium? Oh, fuck yeah! Absolutely! Like what? There are some days where I wasn’t as precise as I could’ve been and there are some days when I just stepped in it. You once said it was the president’s “belief” that three-to-five million … [Read more...] about Sean Spicer Is Ready to Talk About It

Families Remember the People Stolen by the Buffalo Shooting

May 17, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

A lot was taken from the Buffalo, New York, community on Saturday, May 14. Peace. Security. Ten fathers, mothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, neighbors, and community members. The racist attack at Tops Supermarket and the man who traveled across the state to murder Black people couldn’t wrest one thing from victims’ family and friends, however. They still have their memories — stories about their loved ones that go far beyond their ages and occupations or where they lived. And in those loved ones, in some respect at least, these people live on. Below, family and friends shared with Rolling Stone how they remember the people they lost — and what the world needs to know, above all, about these people. Katherine Massey, as Remembered by Her Niece, Dawn Massey The day before it happened, she had just gone with my uncle to spend over $100 on toys at Family Dollar for the children for the next holiday or whatever. The whole bag was toys for the kids, stuff they can play with … [Read more...] about Families Remember the People Stolen by the Buffalo Shooting
