Viewers of the Emmy-nominated Angelyne on Peacock might be surprised to learn just how little of star Emmy Rossum they actually saw. Rossum said during a panel appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event that 10 prosthetic pieces transformed her face and body into that of Los Angeles billboard queen Angelyne. “Nothing of me is me,” Rossum said. “There’s two contact lenses in each eye. There’s a chest piece that wraps around up into the neck and the hairline. Even earlobes, hands — everything is not recognizable [as myself].” Contenders TV: The Nominees — Deadline’s Complete Coverage Emmy-nominated makeup department head Kate Biscoe said the prosthetics created a unique paradox. Biscoe normally is tasked with making prosthetic material look like human skin. However, Angelyne herself has altered her body with plastic surgery. “It’s all very meta because she has put inorganic material in herself to put this other identity and reinvent … [Read more...] about Emmy Rossum On Her ‘Angelyne’ Prosthetics: “Nothing Of Me Is Me” – Contenders TV: The Nominees

Kenan Thompson To Host 2022 Emmy Awards On NBC & Peacock
Saturday Night veteran Kenan Thompson will host the 74th Emmy Awards for NBC and the Television Academy. The three-hour, coast-to-coast live telecast from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles will air Monday, September 12 on NBC and stream live on Peacock for the first time. This will be Thompson’s first time hosting the Emmys. He has recent awards emceeing experience: he hosted the 2021 People’s Choice Awards, which ran simultaneously on NBC and E! this past December, and returned as host of the 2022 NHL Awards a month and a half ago. Thompson’s hire extends the streak of current or former SNL cast members/writers hosting all Emmy Awards ceremonies on NBC that have had a host since the return of the “wheel” system rotating the show among the Big 4 broadcast networks in the mid-1990s. The list includes Conan O’Brien (twice), Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and, most recently, “Weekend Update” co-anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost four years ago. … [Read more...] about Kenan Thompson To Host 2022 Emmy Awards On NBC & Peacock
Game Shows Moving To Primetime Emmys Competition Under Television Academy
Game shows are going primetime. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have agreed to move the game show categories under the Television Academy beginning in 2023. The decision is the result of an agreement between the two academies to award many programming categories by genre instead of daypart. NATAS previously handed out the Emmys for game shows. The new Television Academy Emmy category for Outstanding Game Show will be awarded to programs with game elements that primarily take place in studio and involve mental challenges. They must be self-contained or carryover (winner continues to next episode) and cannot be arced. Game Shows migrating to the Television Academy Emmys will have an 18-month eligibility window, Jan. 1, 2022 – May 31, 2023. The new Television Academy Emmy category Outstanding Host for a Game Show will be awarded to the “master of ceremony” host(s) for a continuing … [Read more...] about Game Shows Moving To Primetime Emmys Competition Under Television Academy

Emmy Snubs: ‘Reservation Dogs,’ Selena Gomez, ‘Yellowstone’ & ‘This Is Us’ Shunned In Nominations
TV Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma said this morning that the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations would reflect only “a fraction” of the immense talent on the small screen this year. He was so on the nose about that, sadly. 2022 Emmy Nominations: Deadline’s Complete Coverage Yet again, TV Academy voters giveth and TV Academy voters taketh away, at least some of the hopes and dreams for the latter who didn’t make the cut this morning. Unveiled by Blockbuster co-stars JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero early (but not too early) Tuesday, the nominations certainly put a spring in the step of Ted Lasso , Jon Stewart and Squid Game. For Yellowstone and Reservation Dogs , however, not so much. Why There Won’t Be Emmy Nominations This Year For Shows Like ‘The Crown’, ‘The Boys’ & ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ There’s no host yet, but the 74th Primetime Emmys will air live at 8 p.m. ET September 12 on NBC and stream live on Peacock for the first … [Read more...] about Emmy Snubs: ‘Reservation Dogs,’ Selena Gomez, ‘Yellowstone’ & ‘This Is Us’ Shunned In Nominations
Zendaya Makes Emmy History With Latest Noms For ‘Euphoria’, Becoming Youngest Two-Time Acting Nominee & Youngest Producing Nom
Euphoria star Zendaya made history this morning as she landed her second Emmy nom for her turn on HBO ’s teen drama, becoming the youngest ever two-time acting nominee. The actress, now 25, is also now the youngest producing nom, as an exec producer on the series, which scored in Outstanding Drama. Zendaya had previously set a record with her first win in 2020, which made her the youngest to conquer the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. 2022 Emmy Nominations: Deadline’s Complete Coverage Based on the Israeli series of the same name, which was created by Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin from HOT, Euphoria follows a group of high school students in the town of East Highland, including Zendaya’s 17-year-old drug addict Rue, through their experiences of identity, trauma, drugs, family, friendships, love and sex. Peter Bart: For Actors, Emmy Season Highlights The Perils Of Walking The Woke Tightrope
As actors ponder their Emmy acceptance speeches for September 12, one wonders whether some incipient Adrian Lester envy might creep into their thoughts. Lester, the Black British actor, won a Tony nomination for playing both a German Jewish banker and a female character in The Lehman Trilogy on Broadway. At the Emmys , actors like Jennifer Coolidge and Steve Martin will likely win kudos for essentially playing themselves, with great aplomb. I empathize with the tensions facing actors today: They covet the opportunity to display their “range” but also understand the risks inherent in boundary crossing. Even Tom Hanks expresses regret for depicting a gay protagonist in 1993’s Philadelphia, and James Franco is catching it for playing Fidel Castro . The woke -phobic Bill Maher raged this week against critics of Helen Mirren for portraying Golda Meir, but some still rail on Mickey Rooney for Breakfast at Tiffany’s . But type-casting, or resistance to it, is … [Read more...] about Peter Bart: For Actors, Emmy Season Highlights The Perils Of Walking The Woke Tightrope
Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett Earn Belated Emmy Nomination for ‘One Last Time’
Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga have earned a belated Emmy nomination for their concert special, One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga . The special — which documented two sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City last August — was already nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) when the 2022 Emmy nominations were announced in July. But because neither Bennett nor Gaga produced the special, they weren’t technically included as nominees. But that officially changed on Tuesday night, Aug. 2, with Gaga and Bennett earning nominations as the hosts of the special. The news arrived just in time for Bennett’s 96th birthday, which is today, Aug. 3. (The special is up for three other awards as well: Outstanding Music Direction; Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Special; and Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special.) One Last Time notably captures Bennett’s final two … [Read more...] about Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett Earn Belated Emmy Nomination for ‘One Last Time’
Emmy-Nominated ‘The Andy Warhol Diaries’ Paints New Portrait Of The Artist As Gay Man: “In The Diaries His Lust Is Very Palpable”
In the mid-1970s Andy Warhol began keeping a diary–of sorts. It started out as a dry accounting of expenses–a tube of paint here, a quart of milk there—dictated to his collaborator Pat Hackett. But over time the entries shifted from the strictly mundane to something deeper and more personal. “I’ve got these desperate feelings,” he noted in a 1981 entry, for instance, “that nothing means anything.” Andy Warhol’s diaries were published posthumously in 1989, Hackett having edited the raw 20,000 pages to a more manageable, if not inconsiderable, 807. But it was not until this year that The Andy Warhol Diaries were transformed into a documentary series for Netflix , and an acclaimed one at that. It has earned four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and individual recognition for Andrew Rossi for writing and directing the series. “The diaries when they were published were seen as scandalous because of all of the gossip,” Rossi … [Read more...] about Emmy-Nominated ‘The Andy Warhol Diaries’ Paints New Portrait Of The Artist As Gay Man: “In The Diaries His Lust Is Very Palpable”
‘Late Night’ Host Seth Meyers On His Emmy Milestone & The Evolving Late-Night Universe
Seth Meyers was trying to avoid being disappointed in front of his children on Emmy nomination morning, so he went for a run around New York City. He needn’t have worried. For the first time since he took the reins, Late Night with Seth Meyers earned a spot on Emmy’s Outstanding Variety Talk Series ballot. Perversely, it was the pandemic that helped the former Saturday Night Live star find his groove. Forced to produce his show from the attic of his in-laws’ house for long stretches with only a painting of an old sea captain and worn copy of The Thorn Birds for company, Meyers ditched his suit and tie and took his show, which launched in 2014, to a more relaxed level. Audiences, and evidently Emmy voters, noticed. Meyers returned to 30 Rock in September 2020, and a studio audience followed just over a year later in October 2021. But he has kept the more informal attire and a way of telling jokes that work in both an empty room and a packed space. He says that the … [Read more...] about ‘Late Night’ Host Seth Meyers On His Emmy Milestone & The Evolving Late-Night Universe
