Women in Music Dwindled in 2020
Same song, different verse — quite literally, it turns out. On Monday (March 8th), the University of South California’s Annenberg Institute released its latest report on music creator demographics, finding that women still make up meager percentages of artists, songwriters, and producers on music charts and award-nomination slates, marking “no meaningful and sustained increase” in the number of female musicians in the male-governed music-making business in close to a decade. The fourth annual report , conducted by USC ’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative with funding from Spotify, examined the gender and race of artists, songwriters, producers, and other creators across 900 top songs in the last nine years; across 2012 to 2020, women comprised a total 21.6% of all artists, 12.6% of all songwriters, and 2.6% of all producers. Researchers Stacy Smith, Katherine Pieper, Marc Choueiti, Karla Hernandez, and Kevin Yao parsed data from the Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts and the Grammy … [Read more...] about Women in Music Dwindled in 2020
‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry’ Ratings Deliver A Royal Flush For CBS; Beat Emmys & Globes Combined
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are no Stormy Daniels and certainly no Michael Jackson, but their sit-down with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday night was certainly a royal payoff for CBS . The two-hour Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special pulled in 2.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 17.1 million viewers for the network in early numbers. Or put another way, right now, that’s more eyeballs than last September’s Primetime Emmys and last week’s Golden Globes put together. Coming in low, the awards ceremonies had 6.4 million and 6.9 million viewers, respectively, and ratings of 1.3 and 1.5 when the dust settled and the final numbers were in. That’s 22% less than the early numbers for Meghan and Harry in total audience and basically even with the Emmys and the Globes’ demo results added up. TV Ratings: ‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry’ Delivers Big Audience for CBS
The couple's interview special with Winfrey draws one of the largest non-sports crowds of the 2020-21 TV season. CBS' interview special Oprah With Meghan and Harry delivered a big audience Sunday night. The two-hour special, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, averaged better than 17 million viewers — 17.14 million, according to Nielsen's fast national numbers. Aside from the post-Super Bowl premiere of The Equalizer on Feb. 7, that's the biggest audience for any non-sports program on the broadcast networks this season. It earned a 2.6 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49, trailing only a Thanksgiving night episode of The Masked Singer (which had a huge NFL lead-in) on the broadcast nets this season. Oprah With Meghan and Harry — which incited furious reactions in the British press Monday — was far and away the top show on TV Sunday by any measure. The closest show on the broadcast networks in total viewers was its lead-in, 60 Minutes , which drew … [Read more...] about TV Ratings: ‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry’ Delivers Big Audience for CBS
How Guns N’ Roses Formed
Guns N’ Roses did not arrive fully formed on L.A.’s Sunset Strip, howling “Sweet Child o’ Mine” with all the might and charisma that made the song a hit in 1988. They only achieved the proper cocktail of sensitivity and machismo after the five musicians in GN’R’s classic lineup found each other in the mid-Eighties. Long before any of them had even dreamt of the songs on Appetite for Destruction, Indiana natives Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin were cutting their teeth in the bands Axl, Hollywood Rose, and L.A. Guns. Eventually, they united with guitarist Slash , bassist Duff McKagan , and drummer Steven Adler under the GN’R banner and made history, but it was a long road to get there. The thing the musicians remember most about their salad days now is the determination they had simply to book small gigs at the Troubadour and Gazzari’s. Related How 'Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?'
