ITV is doubling down on masked entertainment shows. Following the soaraway success of The Masked Singer in the UK, the commercial broadcaster has ordered The Masked Dancer . Bandicoot Scotland will make a seven-part series based on the spin-off show for late spring, meaning it will help fill a giant Britain’s Got Talent -shaped hole in ITV’s schedule after the Simon Cowell talent series was abandoned this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Twelve celebrities will perform unique dances, while covered from head to toe in extravagant, colorful costumes and masks, leaving viewers and a star panel to guess their identities. The Gospel of Robert Finley, Dan Auerbach’s Favorite Singer
Earlier this winter, Robert Finley was backstage at Seattle’s Showbox nightclub discussing his remarkable personal history when the subject of his age came up. The soul singer said he would be turning 64 soon – on February 13th, in fact. “Robert, that’s tomorrow,” said his friend and bandleader Dan Auerbach , breaking into laughter. “With Robert,” Auerbach explained, “every day is his birthday, and is a bit of a celebration.” Finley has plenty of reasons to celebrate lately. After spending almost all of his life living in obscurity within 50 miles of the tiny town of Bernice, Louisiana, Finley has been playing sold-out rooms across the country as part of Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Revue (That tour just wrapped last week; Finley begins a solo headlining tour May 20th in New York). Tonight in Seattle, Finley sang six songs, bringing the house down with his booming range, posessing what Auerbach calls a “deep yearning.” Related Inside Dan Auerbach's Own Rolling Thunder … [Read more...] about The Gospel of Robert Finley, Dan Auerbach’s Favorite Singer

Olivia Kaplan Is Your Next Favorite Indie Singer-Songwriter
Before the pandemic hit last year, Olivia Kaplan was balancing a few hustles — working part-time at a hip Los Angeles restaurant, teaching music lessons, and helping out at the local farmers market — on top of music. After long shifts waiting tables, she’d head straight to the studio to work on her debut album. She didn’t mind and, in fact, found that the arrangement boosted her creativity. “I’m exhausted, but I needed that structure,” says Kaplan, 28. “I don’t think I’m the kind of person that can really be a musician full-time if I’m not touring. I need to have interaction with strangers and have those moments where my brain is turned off.” The fancy wine she got through the restaurant didn’t hurt either: “I can get wine at wholesale and bring it to our recordings,” she says with a laugh. “Natural wine, obviously. Nothing but the best.” Related Stories Girl in Red's Supercharged Indie Rock Honesty How Yung Baby Tate Manifested Her Way to Success Related … [Read more...] about Olivia Kaplan Is Your Next Favorite Indie Singer-Songwriter
Mid-Year Music Update: Streaming Is King as Downloads Fade Away
YouTube, Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody and other music-streaming services are booming like never before, according to new mid-year numbers released by Nielsen Soundscan. Total video and audio streams jumped from 50 billion in the first half of 2013 to 70 billion this year, an increase of 42 percent, while download sales continue to bust, with albums dropping 15 percent and tracks 13 percent. Part of the problem may be a lack of exciting new album releases, as the Top 10 best-sellers include 2013 retreads such as the resilient smash Disney soundtrack for Frozen , Beyonce’s self-titled album and Lorde’s Pure Heroine alongside warmed-over hit-single compilations like NOW 49 and NOW 50 . The State of Streaming Music The most striking difference between the 2014 and 2013 mid-year numbers is this year’s anemic individual album sales. Although Frozen beat last year’s winner, Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience , 2.7 million to 2.5 million, 2014 Top 10 sales are … [Read more...] about Mid-Year Music Update: Streaming Is King as Downloads Fade Away
