Indie label Jagjaguwar has announced a year-long 25th-anniversary celebration that kicks off Thursday with a collaboration between the poet Ross Gay and Bon Iver . “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude” is an expansive piece that finds the Bloomington, Indiana-based poet and educator reciting a piece over a characteristically sprawling Bon Iver soundscape. Bon Iver’s art director, Eric Timothy Carlson, handled the visuals for the piece. Jagjaguwar’s 25th-anniversary celebration will center around a new series, Jag Quarterly : A four-part project that, per a release, will “deliver collections of music, creative endeavors, and partnerships that span physical mediums, born through brand new collaborations from artists within and outside of the Jagjaguwar family.” The label has confirmed a handful of participating artists so far, including Perfume Genius, Moses Sumney, Sharon Van Etten, Lonnie Holley, and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Hayley Williams’ Delivers Delicate Confessionals on ‘Flowers’
A bittersweet truth of this pandemic, among many, is that the “quarantine album” has rapidly become its own genre. While the music industry as a whole has had to make due with recording albums remotely and in lockdown for the past year, the Quarantine Album as a concept is its own sonic beast: emotionally raw, the creation of one or a few people in a home studio, often described as “acoustic” even as layers of synths and reverb contribute to its feelings of isolation. (Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago was a pre-Covid predecessor in more ways than one.) Admittedly, with the exception of Taylor Swift’s Folkmore duo, examples of these albums are still few and far between on major labels; how many will be released in the months and years ahead outside of Bandcamp profiles remains to be seen. With that said, Hayley Williams has codified what a top-to-bottom quarantine album can sound like with her latest LP, Flowers for Vases / descansos, released this … [Read more...] about Hayley Williams’ Delivers Delicate Confessionals on ‘Flowers’

But my body . . . my body’s telling me yes!” Seconds later, Kelly and Phoenix leader Thomas Mars were arm in arm and duetting on “Ignition,” Kelly’s sexy 2003 Chocolate Factory smash, as the band jammed out to its own “1901” riffs, then segued into the even-loucher “I’m a Flirt.” The whole thing lasted less than five minutes, but that was plenty of time to send fans into a frenzy – not that Phoenix needed the help. They were tight, propulsive and supremely confident all night, their painstakingly-planned set demonstrating exactly how to … [Read more...] about Coachella 2013: Phoenix Bring Out R.
