We hear that the latest HBO project from The Wire’s EP David Simon and producer George Pelecanos is finally coming together with the premium network recently quietly greenlighting the project and casting already underway. The duo are working on a limited series based on the Random House book We Own This City : A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by investigative journalist Justin Fenton. Simon and Pelecanos are writing and executive producing We Own the City . HBO’s former President of Miniseries Kary Antholis also executive produces through his Crime Story Media. Pelecanos told us back in October 2019 during The Deuce series finale, that their “next project is set in Baltimore, a miniseries for HBO. “And if my thought-dreams could be seen,” a wise man once said , “they’d probably put my head in a guillotine.” Chaos Walking, an adaptation of Patrick Ness’s Y.A. trilogy about a planet where one’s private hopes and fears become public audio-visual transmissions, cribs the sentiment from that Dylan couplet — though, to be fair, it does not chop off a single person’s head. Characters are shot, beaten, tortured, drowned, chased, burned, pushed into an abyss, scratched and shamed, but no gets the falling blade. What happens to the cast of Doug Liman’s movie version, however, is far worse than any of that. They end up finding themselves stuck in an overcooked 22 lb. cinematic turkey, a genuine schlockbuster, a cosmic flop. The guillotine would have been quick and merciful. An association with this misfire will be on their resume and their IMDb pages and, likely, their conscience for a long, long, long time. (It hits theaters today. Pray it goes away soon.)
