The 71st Berlin International Film Festival unveils its program this week, with the Generation and Retrospective sections kicking off proceedings today. A total of 15 films are selected across the two youth-focused Generation competitions – Kplus and 14plus. Of the titles chosen, 60% are directed by female directors. Scroll down for the full list. The movies come from the likes of Canada, China, and Korea. There are eight world premieres and six debuts. Films arriving from other festivals include the animation Cryptozoo, which was at Sundance and features Lake Bell and Michael Cera in its voice cast. The 2021 Retrospective program will focus on the comedic work of three actresses – Mae West, Rosalind Russell, and Carole Lombard during the era when the Motion Picture Production Code (“Hays Code”) was coming into effect. NY PopsUp, a months-long festival starting February 20 that is billed by organizers as a model for how live performances can return amid Covid-19, has set details for its high-profile inaugural edition. Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo first revealed the initiative, which will run through Labor Day via a public-private partnership overseen by producers Scott Rudin and Jane Rosenthal. PopsUp events, which will span New York City’s five boroughs as well as upstate and Western New York, will be accessible to the public and most are free of charge. Confirmed performers include Hugh Jackman, Renée Fleming, Amy Schumer, Alec Baldwin, Chris Rock, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patti Smith, Mandy Patinkin, Q-Tip and Billy Porter. EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures won a brisk auction to acquire the Gabrielle Zevin novel Tomorrow, And Tomorrow, And Tomorrow for $2 million. Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey and Isaac Klausner will produce w, and the author will write the script. Movie deal came right after a seven-figure North American rights deal from Knopf last week, in partnership with Penguin Canada. Chatto & Windus preempted the book in the UK 24 hours after it was submitted in London, and translation deals are in the process of being closed around the world. The book will be published sometime in the first half of 2022. To Motion Pictures Group president Emma Watts, the book fit what Paramount is trying to do, which is to find new voices that will attract A-list filmmakers. The auction was exceptional. EXCLUSIVE: A decade after Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce co-starred together on the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, the two are reteaming on another longform project at the premium cable network. Pearce has been tapped to co-star opposite Winslet in Mare of Easttown, HBO’s limited series focused on family and community, which is a co-production of HBO and wiip.  He replaces Ben Miles, who had been originally cast in the role but left due to scheduling conflicts more than a year ago. Written by Brad Inglesby, and directed by Craig Zobel, Mare of Easttown stars Winslet as Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective whose life crumbles around her as she investigates a local murder.
