The 71st Berlin International Film Festival unveils its program this week, with the Generation and Retrospective sections kicking off proceedings today. A total of 15 films are selected across the two youth-focused Generation competitions – Kplus and 14plus. Of the titles chosen, 60% are directed by female directors. Scroll down for the full list. The movies come from the likes of Canada, China, and Korea. There are eight world premieres and six debuts. Films arriving from other festivals include the animation Cryptozoo, which was at Sundance and features Lake Bell and Michael Cera in its voice cast. The 2021 Retrospective program will focus on the comedic work of three actresses – Mae West, Rosalind Russell, and Carole Lombard during the era when the Motion Picture Production Code (“Hays Code”) was coming into effect. South by Southwest Conference and Festivals have revealed the full program for the 28th edition of the SXSW Film Festival — and it will all take place online March 16-20. As previously reported , the documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil is set to open the fest while the Charli XCX quarantine docu Alone Together will serve as the film fest closer. Keeping in line with the films about musicians, Mary Wharton’s Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free will make its World Premiere as a centerpiece film. “It’s been a year unlike any we’ve experienced, first marked by the cancellation of SXSW 2020,” said Janet Pierson, Director of Film. “We feel privileged to have been able to pivot to SXSW Online and present a fantastic treasure trove of programming, including a pared down and wonderful selection of films that we know will delight, entertain and move our attendees. James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal become entrepreneurs in seedy 1970s New York City in the debut teaser for HBO series The Deuce . Franco takes on dual roles as shaggy-haired twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, a gambler and bartender who become fronts for the mob in Times Square. Gyllenhaal plays Eileen “Candy” Merrell, an independent sex worker who transitions into the booming porn industry. The clip showcases the sordid atmosphere of the era, teasing gunfire, violent police altercations, sex, nightclub boozing and a marquee promoting the premiere of 1972 “Golden Age” porn flick Deep Throat . The series will also explore the rise of HIV, the real estate boom and police efforts to crack down on the adult film trade. AMC+ Acquires Trio Of Crime Dramas; ALLBLK Greenlights Kaye Singleton’s Biblical Drama Series ‘Covenant’
AMC + announced on Thursday that it has has acquired the rights to three crime drama series: Cold Courage , Kin and Too Close . The first to premiere on the streaming service is Lionsgate’s Cold Courage , which will hit AMC+ on Thursday, March 11. Based on the award-winning and best-selling novels from Finnish journalist Pekka Hiltunen, Cold Courage follows two women as they collide during a series of murders in present-day London. Mari (Pihla Viitala), a fierce psychologist, and Lia (Sofia Pekkari), a shy graphic artist, are drawn together through the “Studio” – a clandestine group of like-minded people operating off the grid, dedicated to righting the wrongs of the powerful, influential and corrupt.
