Bill Maher made an incredibly strong case Friday night that Hollywood is ruining itself by pigeonholing actors into narrow lanes based on their heritage, sexual orientation, identity, etc. The "Real Time" host made his case and, frankly, you gotta listen to it because it cuts to the core ... that casting directors now take their cues from the casting cops. He lays out his case, beginning with John Leguizamo , who was incredulous James Franco was picked to play Fidel Castro , saying "No more appropriation Hollywood ... Boycott! This f'd up." Bill noted John, a Columbian actor, ain't Venetian but he played one ... nor is he a little French man nor an Italian plumber ... but yeah, he played them too. As he says, "People become actors so they can spend their lives not being who they are." He notes Sean Penn snagged an Oscar for playing gay activist Harvey Milk ... that was once considered courageous ... now it's the opposite. Eddie Vedder Joins the Who for Powerhouse ‘Quadrophenia’ Show
There was an elegiac quality to the Who ’s performance of Quadrophenia at London’s Royal Albert Hall last night, which marked the 10th anniversary of benefit shows in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity. Roger Daltrey , the prime mover behind the benefit, has said that this is the last time the Who will stage their 1973 rock opera (they first toured it in 1996), and Pete Townshend , who is suffering from severe tinnitus, warned that if the show went badly he would have to retire from live performance all together ( read more on his condition here ). The concert’s wildly enthusiastic reception should at least delay that decision for a while longer. Looking back to the heady summer of 1964, when warring mods and rockers turned British seaside resorts into battlegrounds, Quadrophenia was steeped in nostalgia from the start, and now the album itself is a period piece from a time when it briefly seemed as if any ambitious band might be expected to turn its hand to a … [Read more...] about Eddie Vedder Joins the Who for Powerhouse ‘Quadrophenia’ Show

Venice: Polemics, Possible Prizewinners & A Late-Fest Red Carpet Protest
The Venice Film Festival draws to a close this evening, when prizes will be handed out by Lucrecia Martel ’s jury. It’s been a hot 10 days on the Lido, and not just because the mercury was stifling throughout. We expected controversy coming in, and certainly the inclusion of Roman Polanski ’s An Officer And A Spy in competition caused a stir at the outset — Martel on opening day seemed to suggest she might not give the film a fair shake, only to clarify her remarks 24 hours later. It was relatively smooth sailing from then on, with pictures vying for the Golden Lion generally well-received. Much attention focused on Warner Bros’ Joker and Netflix’s Marriage Story which both got extended standing ovations. It ain’t over til it’s over, however, and early this morning a protest broke out on the red carpet. About 200 people from the No Large Ships committee occupied the area in front of the Palazzo del Cinema. A peaceful proceeding, it focused largely on … [Read more...] about Venice: Polemics, Possible Prizewinners & A Late-Fest Red Carpet Protest
