C’mon Voters: The Oscars Could Use A Little Sequel-itis

January 16, 2023 by deadline.com

For at least some of you 10,000 or so Academy Awards voters, it’s not too late. You’ve still got 33 hours to have some fun with your Oscar ballot, to shake up the race and to put some awesome new stats in the record books. And it’s easy. All you have to do is follow the lead of your brethren at the Producers Guild of America (to which a lot of you belong anyway), and nominate not one, not two, but four blockbuster sequels for the Best Picture prize. How delicious would it be to see the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences follow the PGA by handing nominations to that multibillion-dollar quartet Avatar: The Way of Water , Top Gun: Maverick , Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (yes, a streamer)? Overnight, the awards contest would be transformed, from a chess game among pinched sophisticates moving important little pictures around the board to an all-out slugfest among heavyweights with big studio backing and a … [Read more...] about C’mon Voters: The Oscars Could Use A Little Sequel-itis

2023 Golden Globes Generates 33M Viewing Minutes On Peacock

January 20, 2023 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE: The 80th annual Golden Globes generated 33M minutes of viewing on Peacock in the first two days the awards show was available on the service. This year not only marked the ceremony’s return to broadcast television on NBC , but it also was the first year that the show was live streamed on Peacock. During the day of the event and the day after, the show drew 793,000 video starts, which the streamer defines as any video start or viewing session, and not unique viewers. A single viewer can have multiple video starts. According to the streamer, that’s a 245% increase from 2021’s ceremony — though it’s important to note that the full 2021 show was only available as video on demand and not in real time. NBC drew its lowest audience ever for the Golden Globes earlier this month, with an average of just 6.3M people tuning in according to live+same-day Nielsen data. The additional context of viewership on Peacock helps paint a picture of how much the … [Read more...] about 2023 Golden Globes Generates 33M Viewing Minutes On Peacock

Netflix Beats Q4 Subscriber Growth Target, But Mixed Financial Results Reflect Challenging Environment

January 19, 2023 by deadline.com

Netflix beat forecasts for subscriber gains for the fourth quarter and also edged revenue estimates, but pressure on earnings per share reflected broader challenges in the streaming business. The company added almost 7.7 million subscribers during the fourth quarter, reaching 230.75 million globally. That was well ahead of Wall Street guidance of almost 4.6 million new customers and within sight of the stellar 8.3 million added in the year-ago quarter. Revenue came in at $7.82 billion, up just 2% from the same period in 2021 and a hair below Wall Street analysts’ consensus expectation for $7.85 billion. Earnings per share of 12 cents were well below the forecast of 45 cents and down from $1.33 a year ago. Along with the stats, the company announced that co-founder Reed Hastings would be passing the Co-CEO baton to Greg Peters. Hastings will become executive chairman. Peters had headed up product for Netflix before adding the chief operating officer title and then … [Read more...] about Netflix Beats Q4 Subscriber Growth Target, But Mixed Financial Results Reflect Challenging Environment

‘Sometimes I Think About Dying’ Sundance Film Review: Female Loneliness And Isolation Lead To Thoughts Of Death

January 20, 2023 by deadline.com

Sometimes I Think About Dying is directed by Rachel Lambert , written by Stefanie Abel Horowitz, Kevin Armento, and Katy Wright. The movie stars Daisy Ridley , Dave Merheje, Megan Stalter and Brittany O’ Grady. It had its world premiere Thursday on the opening day of the Sundance Film Festival. The film begins with shots of a seaside northwestern town on the Oregon coast. It appears to be a dreary and somewhat lonely place. Next we see Fran (Ridley) laying in bed peering outside the window at the gray sky. Instead of embracing the morning, she looks terrified to confront it. She works a mundane office job that she likes but is the least animated of her colleagues. Most of her work day is spent daydreaming about death or being overly observant of small things. Her night routine is also humdrum. Fran comes home, cooks dinner (in the microwave), thinks about dying, plays sudoku, ignores calls, brushes her teeth, and goes to bed every night around 10 p.m. Her co-workers … [Read more...] about ‘Sometimes I Think About Dying’ Sundance Film Review: Female Loneliness And Isolation Lead To Thoughts Of Death

‘Saturday Night Live’ Spoofs George Santos’ Fabulist Claims And His Fabulous Drag Performer Past

January 21, 2023 by deadline.com

Coming off a holiday break, Saturday Night Live went with embattled congressman George Santos ’ fabulist past claims for its cold open tonight while also spoofing his alleged past as a drag performer. The sketch aired just hours after the real Santos responded to reports that he was a drag performer when he lived in Brazil. Reporters caught up with him at New York’s La Guardia Airport , and he told them, “I was not a drag queen in Brazil. I was young and I had fun at a festival.” That non-denial denial was pretty much the theme of the SNL opener, set up as a segment of Fox NFL Sunday with Santos, played by Bowen Yang, as one of the correspondents. When the Fox NFL Sunday hosts cut to Santos, reporting from the field, he told them, “I’m sort of the real Bo Jackson, and I’m proud to be first African American quarterback to ever dunk a football.” After making many more claims about his football greatness, Santos then is called out on it. One of the hosts … [Read more...] about ‘Saturday Night Live’ Spoofs George Santos’ Fabulist Claims And His Fabulous Drag Performer Past

" Star Trek: Voyager " actor Robert Picardo says his estranged wife is under investigation in a murder case, and he now believes his own life is in imminent danger. Picardo -- who's in the middle of an ugly divorce from Linda Pawlik -- asked a judge to throw Pawlik off his property STAT, because he's deathly afraid of her.
