Matthew Dolan Detroit Free Press Published 5:05 PM EST Jan 21, 2019 Rudy Barker's impersonation may have been the sincerest form of flattery to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "I often asked myself why did Dr. King get assassinated on my 12 birthday, April 4, in 1968," Barker wrote in a self-obituary published as part of his funeral service Monday. "It was revealed that God gave me the gift of impersonating voices so I could carry on the legacy of Dr. King." Barker died earlier this month at age 62. On Monday morning, dozens of his family and friends memorialized his life to coincide with the birthday of King, who had inspired Barker to become an pitch-perfect impersonator when he was growing up in Detroit's housing projects. Vice President Mike Pence is coming under criticism for comparing Donald Trump with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the slain civil rights icon’s holiday weekend, but he certainly doesn’t have a monopoly on misusing Dr. King’s legacy. When the scandal broke in June of 2013, Trump’s first instinct was to give Deen “credit fot admitting her mistake”: Trump also had some advice for Deen in the wake of the scandal, namely that she should “stop apologizing”: But Trump also tried to deflect blame from Deen by helpfully pointing out that black people sometimes use the n-word, as … [Read more...] about That Time Trump Used Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Defend Paula Deen Over N-Word Controversy
Vice President Mike Pence invoked the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in order to promote Donald Trump‘s latest attempt to work his way out of the Trump shutdown, in which Trump offered to undo some of what he’s done to DREAMers in exchange for border wall funding. On Sunday morning’s edition of CBS News’ Face the Nation, host Margaret Brennan pressed Pence on Trump’s latest offer, which includes temporary protection for the DACA recipients that Trump himself ordered could be eligible for deportation. Noting that the plan has no Democratic support, Brennan questioned whether this was a “genuine attempt” to end the shutdown. Pence went into a lengthy recap of the administration;s talking points, then added something new. “Honestly, you know, the hearts and minds of the American people today are thinking a lot about it being the weekend we are remembering the life and the work of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.,” Pence … [Read more...] about Mike Pence Tries to Sell Trump’s Border Wall Demand with Martin Luther King Quote
