When I was younger, Martin Luther King Jr Day was like a preview for Black History Month. We were taught about King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the March on Washington, and how he took his inspiration from Gandhi to pursue non-violent tactics towards Civil Disobedience. I was not taught that, in his time, King was seen as an extremist.American History tends to mythologize its heroes to the point where it becomes blurry as to what was the actual truth about the men, women, and movements that helped shape this country. Martin Luther King Jr. has been used as the equivalent of rolling a D20 (D&D reference there) in discussions about groups like Black Lives Matter, The Black Panthers, or other Civil Rights leaders like Malcolm X. During the election, I would see Bernie supporters complain that black people who were voting for Hilary over Bernie were “choosing a Goldwater girl over someone who marched with MLK!!” They complain that groups … [Read more...] about How Yesterday’s Enemies Become Today’s Heroes: Martin Luther King Jr.
President Donald Trump shocked the world yesterday after it was reported he referred to El Salvador, Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries” during an Oval Office meeting on immigration reform. Today, in his first public appearance since the remarks dropped, will be signing a proclamation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. live at 11:30 am EST. (not a joke). The proclamation will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which falls this Monday, January 15. It is unclear if he will make remarks or answer any questions from the press. In the meantime, Trump has seemingly denied making the comments at all. He took to Twitter this morning to flood the social network with a series of tweets on DACA and immigration reform and dropped this nugget on Haiti.“Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country,” he wrote. “Never said ‘take them out.’ Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful … [Read more...] about WATCH LIVE: After ‘Sh*thole Countries’ Remark, Trump to Honor Martin Luther King
President Donald Trump ran away from journalists today when they tried to ask him questions about his “sh*thole countries” remark during an immigration meeting this week. Trump’s fleeing from the media came after a brief White House ceremony during which he signed a proclamation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. After signing the document and taking in the applause, Trump headed out of the room while ignoring questions shouted at him from reporters. The questions to Trump were quite direct. “Mr. Trump, are you a racist?!” One reporter shouted. This was Trump’s first public event since his alleged comments came to light, and even though he partially denied the reports on Twitter earlier today, they have been a persistent new source of controversy for the administration. Senator Dick Durbin, who attended the immigration meeting with Trump, has countered the president by insisting that the reports about the “sh*thole” comments are … [Read more...] about Reporters Shout Questions at Trump At Martin Luther King Ceremony: ‘Mr. Trump, Are You A Racist?!’
