Django Unchained Almost Lost Its Funniest Scene Because Test Audiences Didn’t Get It

· February 9, 2021 ·

Django Unchained is in many ways the most Tarantino-esque movie that Quentin Tarantino has made since Pulp Fiction . One of the most memorable scenes in Django Unchained is sometimes referred to as the "baghead" scene, where a bunch of KKK members complain about their poorly constructed face masks made out of burlap sacks. In a recent interview for Empire, Tarantino revealed even he was intimidated by the prospect of filming the scene to perfection. "That has as much hysterical laughter as I've ever heard in any screening of any movie, and it happens all over the world. That was everyone's favorite scene in the script. Amy Pascal, half the reason she wanted to make the movie at Columbia was because of that scene. But it was one of those scenes that it was such a hit on the page, I started getting intimidated about would it be that good in the movie? Does everyone love it so much on the page [that it's] gonna lose something in the translation once I get a bunch of actors … [Read more...] about Django Unchained Almost Lost Its Funniest Scene Because Test Audiences Didn’t Get It

Quentin Tarantino Uses N-Word Backstage at Golden Globes

· January 14, 2013 ·

Quentin Tarantino shocked reporters at the Golden Globes last night when he used the N-word while addressing use of the slur throughout his new film Django Unchained , for which he picked up the award for Best Screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter . The Best Movies of 2012: ‘Django Unchained’ “They think I should soften it, that I should lie, that I should massage,” Tarantino said, referring to widespread criticism from critics and filmmakers like Spike Lee that has been leveled against him for using the word in his film. But the director said that setting the film in the pre-Civl War era South, as well as his own artistic integrity, kept him from doctoring his script. “I could never do that when it comes to my characters,” he said. Tarantino also noted that slavery continues to exist across the globe (“go to Malaysia,” he said), and criticized the United States for a legal system that he believes has a bias against African-Americans. “Drug laws … [Read more...] about Quentin Tarantino Uses N-Word Backstage at Golden Globes

‘Argo,’ ‘Les Miserables’ Triumph at Golden Globes

· January 14, 2013 ·

As usual, the Golden Globes ceremony was full of surprises – from goofy, possibly booze-fueled celebrity antics to unexpected, first-time wins. From the spot-on pairing of cohosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to the surprise appearance of former president Bill Clinton, to the thinly veiled coming-out speech by Jodie Foster, the Sunday evening awards show kept it interesting. On a night jam-packed with awards for both TV and film, no single movie or series walked away the clear winner. In terms of sheer number, the big-screen adaptation of Les Miserables picked up the most movie awards, three: Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical; Best Actor, Comedy or Musical (Hugh Jackman); and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway). It was the first Globes win for both of the actors. An awkward Hathaway called her Globe trophy a “lovely blunt object that I will forever use as a weapon against self-doubt.” Photos: 2013 Golden Globe Awards: Live From the Red Carpet Arguably creating the most … [Read more...] about ‘Argo,’ ‘Les Miserables’ Triumph at Golden Globes

Golden Globes 2013: You Can Smell the Pills From Here

· January 14, 2013 ·

There is one sacred tradition at the Golden Globes : Nobody gives a rat’s ass who wins, because the awards are given by the laughably cred-free Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But the other Golden Globes tradition is the movie stars show up anyway, because they can’t resist the combo of free booze and camera time. So last night the Beverly Hills Hilton was wall-to-wall celebrities , all trying to get as wasted as whoever did Helen Mirren’s hair. As Amy Poehler and Tina Fey proclaimed in their brilliant opening monologue, “You can smell the pills from here!” Thanks to Fey and Poehler, it was a surprisingly excellent Golden Globes bash. These ladies are so smiley and charming, they can get away with even nastier barbs than Ricky Gervais did last year. As Poehler said, “I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty . But when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.” And Tina Fey announced, … [Read more...] about Golden Globes 2013: You Can Smell the Pills From Here
